Job summary

Byline Bank in Chicago is seeking a Sr. Accountant to support month-end close, prepare and review transactions, and assist in schedules for financial statements and regulatory filings.

This role ensures GAAP compliance, manages payroll-related entries, and supports SEC/FDIC/Federal Reserve reporting. You will collaborate across departments and contribute to internal control improvements in a hybrid work environment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; Master’s and/or CPA preferred.
  • 3+ years of general accounting, public accounting and/or banking experience.
  • 2+ years in a supervisory or lead capacity (preferred).
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, reporting and systems; Excel proficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares and reviews general ledger journal entries, reconciliations, and schedules for close.
  • Maintains accuracy of cash, investments, loans, deposits, liabilities and related accounts.
  • Supports month-end close, audits, and regulatory filings (SEC/FDIC/Federal Reserve).
  • Collaborates with stakeholders and improves internal controls over financial reporting.
  • Assists with preparation of schedules for regulatory reports and internal analyses.

Objective Of Position The Sr. Accountant is responsible for supporting month-end close activities, preparing and reviewing accounting transactions, and assisting in the preparation of various schedules for interim and annual financial statements, and regulatory filings. This role ensures the accuracy, completeness, and compliance of financial records in accordance with U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and applicable regulatory requirements. Duties And Responsibilities
  • Prepares and reviews general ledger journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules for monthly, quarterly, and annual close.
  • Responsible for key technical areas, which include, but are not limited to cash, investments, loans, deposits, other assets and liabilities.
  • Researches outstanding items to ensure timely and proper resolution of aged items.
  • Reviews, prepares and analyzes accounting transactions, financial statements, and related reports to assess accuracy and completeness, and provide variance explanations for both internal and external analysis.
  • Processes payroll funding and related general ledger entries.
  • Investigates and resolves inconsistencies in journal entries, documents, and reports.
  • Assists with preparation of schedules to support U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and regulatory reports to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, Federal Reserve Bank, and Federal Home Loan Bank.
  • Provides support for internal and external audits, special projects, and ad hoc requests as needed.
  • Complies with and assists in updating, interpreting, and implementing accounting and bank policies and procedures.
  • Ensures record systems and procedures are maintained in accordance with GAAP and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintains and enhances internal controls in accordance with internal control frameworks.
  • Identifies control gaps or process inefficiencies and recommends improvements to enhance internal controls over financial reporting.
  • Communicates effectively and collaborates with business partners and other bank departments, internal audit and external parties.
  • Commitment to continuously improve the automation of accounting and reporting processes.
  • Provides guidance, mentorship and training as needed.

  • Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance. Master’s degree and/or CPA preferred.
  • 3+ years of general accounting, public accounting and/or banking experience.
  • 2+ years in a supervisory or lead capacity, preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, with emphasis in Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
  • Solid knowledge of accounting standards, processes, reporting and systems.
  • Familiarity with Prologue, FIS, BlackLine, and/or BankTel/Ascend is a plus.
  • Strong technical and analytical skills required.
  • Excellent communication skills both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work in a challenging and fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrates ability to multi-task and manage changing priorities and deadlines, with attention to detail and an ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Physical Demands/Work Environment Usual office environment with frequent sitting, walking, and standing, and occasional climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and balancing. Frequent use of eye, hand, and finger coordination enabling the use of office equipment. Oral and auditory capacity enabling interpersonal communication as well as communication through automated devices.   • Compensation & Benefits Byline Bank offers competitive industry rate salary bands with the goal of retaining and growing talented individuals. We regularly review and adjust our compensation structure as needed to ensure equity across teams and levels. The salary range for this position is between $75,000 to $95,000 + incentive In addition, Byline provides benefits including medical coverage, dental, vision, disability, 401k, paid time off and much more! Depending on the specific role, compensation may also include discretionary bonuses and other benefit programs. The actual compensation package may vary based on factors such as skill set, experience level, and candidate's location.
