Job summary

Harlem Children's Zone (HCZ) seeks a Track & Field Sprint Coach to lead scholar-athletes across elementary to high school programs in Harlem. You will design progressive training, lead practices, and prepare athletes for competition while fostering academic accountability and personal growth.

The role emphasizes mentorship, safety, and collaboration with school leadership, athletic staff, and HCZ partners to ensure a high-performing, values-driven program.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required, bachelor’s degree preferred.
• 3+ years coaching track and field, sprinting, hurdles, or related speed-based discipline.
• Knowledge of track rules, sprint mechanics, starts, acceleration, and speed development.
• Ability to design progressive training for youth and adolescents.
• Experience coaching and supporting youth populations.
• Proven ability to recruit and mentor scholar-athletes.
• Commitment to HCZ’s mission, values, and programs.
• Strong leadership and communication skills.
• Ability to travel to away meets and events; evenings/weekends available.
• CPR/First Aid certification or ability to obtain.

Responsibilities

• Lead and implement a comprehensive sprint-development program for elementary, middle, and high school scholar-athletes.
• Design age-appropriate, progressive training plans for acceleration, max velocity, and speed endurance.
• Lead daily practices and sprint-specific sessions in alignment with the Track & Field program.
• Develop individualized training plans based on ability, experience, and schedule.
• Prepare scholar-athletes for sprint events (60m, 100m, 200m, 400m, relays, hurdles).
• Teach sprint mechanics, posture, arm action, starts, and race execution.
• Collaborate with Strength & Conditioning, athletic trainers, and coaches to support health and performance.
• Evaluate performance via times, testing, and video analysis; adjust plans accordingly.
• Recruit and retain scholar-athletes; promote sportsmanship and team culture.
• Maintain accurate athlete records and communicate with families and school staff.
