Job summary

Harlem Children’s Zone (HCZ) seeks a Track & Field Distance Coach to lead scholar-athletes across elementary to high school levels. The role focuses on developing endurance, speed, technique, and race strategy while promoting academic growth and leadership within HCZ’s mission.

The position requires 3+ years coaching distance events, strong instructional skills, and the ability to balance training loads with youth development.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; bachelor’s degree preferred.
• At least three years of coaching distance running or related endurance sport.
• Experience coaching distance events (800m, 1500m, 3200m, cross country).
• Strong knowledge of training principles, race strategy, conditioning, and injury prevention.
• Ability to design progressive training plans for youth and adolescents.
• Experience recruiting, mentoring, and retaining scholar-athletes.

Responsibilities

• Develop and implement a comprehensive distance-training program for elementary to high school scholars.
• Lead daily practices and age-appropriate training sessions.
• Prepare scholars for distance events (800m–5K, cross country).
• Monitor training load, recovery, and athlete readiness.
• Collaborate with coaching staff, athletic trainers, and school leadership.
• Evaluate performance and adjust training plans accordingly.
• Recruit and retain scholar-athletes and promote academic accountability.
