Job Description

Assistant Athletic Director for Middle and High Schools

The Assistant Athletic Director supports the Athletic Director in overseeing the operation of the school’s athletic programs. The Assistant Athletic Director will have a vital role in the day‑to‑day operations of the athletic events on campus, maintaining athletic facilities, and supporting any daily duties the Athletic Director may need help with.

The Role of the Assistant Athletic Director

  • Works with Athletic Director to cover home athletic events and act as the athletic admin on duty as necessary.
  • Assists in implementing the athletic policies and programs of RSS.
  • Communicates and promotes the athletic programs to community, schools, and parents through parent square and social media.
  • Checks team rosters, final forms, MaxPreps, and eligibility.
  • Coordinated and supervises the gates, seating, and crowd control when requested.
  • Ensures all coaches complete the required coaching requirements set by the NCHSAA and RSS.
  • Ensures practices, games, matches, etc. are conducted with concern for safety of student athletes and spectators.
  • Familiar with the school's EAP for the gym and all outside athletic facilities.
  • Familiar with NCHSAA guidelines for inclement weather and heat restrictions.
  • Maintains and ensures athletic facilities are clean and held year‑round.
  • Prepares facilities to be clean and ready for competition on game days.
  • Carries out any other duties assigned by the Athletic Director and/or Principal.
  • Completes required requirements for Coaches and Athletic Directors set by the NCHSAA and RSS.

First Responder Responsibilities

  • Must have completed and continue to maintain certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) from an organization such as the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
  • Maintain certification in first aid from an organization such as the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
  • Maintain training in concussion management offered by an organization such as the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS).
  • Maintain continuing education in injury prevention and management offered by NFHS.
  • Complete 10 hours of staff development each school year specific to first aid, injury recognition and prevention. These may include hours needed for recertification/renewals.
  • Do not have coaching responsibilities during the season in which the person is working as a licensed athletic trainer or first responder.
  • Attend all football practices and games unless excused by the superintendent, superintendent’s designee, or county Athletic Director due to an emergency. A replacement must be in place for absences.
  • Keep accurate records of all injuries to student athletes.
  • Be “on call” for any emergencies resulting in physical injury to a student that occurs in their assigned school.
  • Outside of football, be available to attend injuries, tape, and be accessible in the afternoons for home contests.
  • Provide written proof or copy of N.C. Athletic Training licensure or First Responder certifications to the Principal each year.
  • Attend all football practices and games unless excused.
