Job Description
Role: Athletic Coach – Assistant Coach – Boys – Intermediate.
Reports to: Head coach and athletic director, in conjunction with the middle school principal.
Supervises: Staff of middle school coaches as assigned.
Qualifications
- Ability to organize and supervise a total sports program.
- Previous successful coaching experience in assigned sport (preferable).
- Substantial knowledge of technical aspects of the sport and a commitment to continual learning of new theories and procedures.
- Ability to serve as an appropriate role model for student athletes.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Thorough knowledge of athletic policies approved by the Rowan Salisbury Schools Board of Education and responsibility for implementation by the team’s staff.
- Knowledge of existing system, state, and league regulations; consistent implementation and interpretation for staff.
- Understanding of proper administrative line of command and referral of requests or grievances through proper channels.
- Attendance at all required public, staff, and departmental meetings.
Staff Responsibilities
- Establish fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques to be taught by assistants; design conferences, clinics, and staff meetings.
- Train and inform staff, encouraging professional growth.
- Delegate specific duties, supervise implementation, analyze staff effectiveness at season’s end, and evaluate assistants.
- Maintain discipline, adjust grievances, and increase morale and cooperation.
- Perform other duties assigned by the athletic director or principal.
Administrative Duties
- Provide safeguards for maintenance and protection of assigned equipment sites.
- Advise the head coach and recommend policy, method, or procedural changes.
Student Responsibilities
- Serve as a mentor to each athlete, promoting character traits such as trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.
- Monitor student athlete grades and conduct.
- Guide and safeguard athletes at practices, games, and while traveling.
- Provide training rules, schedule, calendar, and unique sport regulations to athletes and their parents.
- Follow programs concerning injuries, medical attention, and emergencies.
- Direct student managers, assistants, and statisticians.
- Assist athletes in college or advanced educational selection.
Finance, Facility and Equipment
- Accountable for all equipment.
- Mark and identify all equipment before issuing or storing.
- Monitor equipment rooms and coaches' offices, authorize entry, issue, or requisition of equipment.
- Ensure athletes occupy authorized areas of the building at appropriate times.
- Examine locker rooms before and after practices and games, checking general cleanliness.
- Maintain specific sport equipment and facility cleanliness and maintenance.
- Instill respect for equipment and school property.
Public Relations
- Promote the sport within the school through recruiting athletes not in other programs and through media and community programs.
- Maintain good public relations with media, booster club, parents, officials, volunteers, and fans.
