The purpose of this job is to perform skilled/manual work functions in City park and recreation areas. Incumbents in this class will be responsible for maintenance using chemical spray equipment, power tools, and various other field equipment. They work with a variety of hand tools and small machinery such as tractors, edgers, aerators, box blades, irrigation equipment, ball field lining equipment, pressure washers, etc.
This position typically performs a variety of tasks, which may include sod cutting and installation, mowing, trimming, planting, watering, fertilizing, digging, raking, athletic field maintenance, field irrigation system installation and repair, painting, power washing, and completing logs or routine records. The employee may drive a vehicle to sites as needed. Work is conducted indoors and outdoors year-round in all weather conditions. The class operates according to set procedures under direct supervision.
High School Diploma or GED and at least two years of routine manual work experience. Experience in athletic field and grounds care, fertilizer/pesticide spraying, and maintenance is desirable. Knowledge of fertilizer and pesticide application, grounds care, and maintenance procedures such as mowing, edging, raking, and weeding. Familiarity with methods, equipment, and materials used in groundskeeping, and safe operation of hand and power tools. Ability to work harmoniously with others and the public. Proficiency in operating a personal computer.
Must be available to work evenings and weekends as required. Valid Florida driver license and satisfactory driving record are required. Must obtain a Florida Pesticide license within the first year of employment. Ability to obtain Green Industries, Best practices management (GI-BMP) certification within one year of hire.
