Job Description
Definition: To maintain a safe and enjoyable sports gym program for all ages, lead sports and recreation activities, and support an after‑school or summer sports program.
Essential Functions
- Implement and supervise recreational activities, including sports, crafts, games, and field trips.
- Collect monthly fees, issue receipts, and maintain enrollment records.
- Lead recreational activities, supervise children, and enforce safety rules.
- Resolve conflicts among children and adults.
- Monitor activities within the facility or outdoors, and provide information to the public on program activities.
- Respond to parent, school, or community concerns and direct them to higher level staff as necessary.
- Provide first aid as necessary.
- Assist higher level staff with attendance tracking, incident reports, and other routine program documentation.
- Assist with day‑to‑day supervision of gym operations, including monitoring activity areas, equipment use, and overall program flow.
- Provide guidance and support to part‑time staff and volunteers, modeling appropriate behavior management and activity leadership.
- Help set up, organize, and put away sports equipment and program materials; report damaged equipment or safety concerns to higher level staff.
Marginal Functions
- Assist in general cleaning and upkeep of facilities.
- Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
- Train new Recreation Leaders assigned to the site.
Qualifications
Knowledge of
- General recreation principles and practices.
- Rules and regulations of age‑appropriate recreation activities.
- Basic art and craft techniques, games, and sports.
- Procedures of record keeping.
- Basic mathematical principles.
- English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
Abilities
- Learn recreation activities, rules, and regulations.
- Respond to requests and inquiries from the general public.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Use recreation software systems.
- Attend meetings and in‑service trainings related to work.
Experience and Education
Two years of increasingly responsible experience in recreation programs or a childcare setting. Completion of high school or equivalent; college coursework is preferred.
Licenses and Certifications
Valid California driver license. CPR and First Aid certification or ability to obtain within six months of hire.
Special Requirements
May be required to pass TB test depending on assignment.
Minimum Age
Must be at least 18 years of age to apply.
Working Conditions
Environmental Conditions
Indoor and outdoor facilities; exposure to noise, dust, heat, cold, and inclement weather conditions; working with young children, teenagers, and clients with special needs.
Physical Demands
Occasional moderate or light lifting; bending, stooping, kneeling, crawling; walking and standing for prolonged periods.

Salary Range
$18.75 – $19.50 per hour.
