Job summary

The City of Oakland is recruiting for a part-time Sports Official to support recreation centers and programs for the city’s youth. You will help run activities, manage facilities, and assist with events across OPRYD recreation sites.

Candidates must be at least 16 years old and have at least 1 year of officiating or playing experience. An eighth‑grade education is required, and you will work evenings and weekends as assigned.

Qualifications

• Education: 8th grade completion required.
• Experience: One year of officiating or playing in an assigned sport.
• Age: Candidates must be at least sixteen years of age or older.

Responsibilities

• Clean outdoor recreation facilities and areas.
• Set up recreation equipment, supplies, and props for programs, activities, and events; assist with issuing and collecting supplies.
• Assist staff in running recreation activities and sports programs.
• Refer questions from the public to designated staff.
• Admit members/guest to recreation events.
• Assist members/guest in dining hall or kitchen; set/clear tables; serve food; clean and wash kitchen equipment.
• Unload, store, and stack supplies.
• Assist with maintaining order and discipline among younger participants.
• Assist with marking courts and diamonds; perform simple clean‑up of grounds and buildings.

This is a public contact position. The City highly encourages all bilingual candidates to apply! Some positions may require bilingual skills in Spanish, Cantonese, or Mandarin. Under the authority of Civil Service Rules Section 5.03, if a position requires bilingual language skills, only those candidates who have indicated they are bilingual in the required language(s) will be referred. Any combination of education and experience that is equivalent to the following minimum qualifications may be acceptable.

Education:

Successful completion of the eighth grade.

Experience:

One (1) year of experience officiating or playing in an assigned sport.

Candidates must be at least sixteen (16) years of age or older at the time of application.

Desirable Qualifications

Bilingual skills in Spanish, Cantonese, and Mandarin are highly desirable for certain positions.

Work Permits:

Minors will be subject to state guidelines and restrictions governing their employment while employed with the City of Oakland. This shall include work permits, records, hours worked and time reporting guidelines. Minors seeking information regarding work permits should contact their local school district. When applicable, work permits must be obtained prior to beginning employment.

Other Requirements

• Candidates who receive conditional offers of employment will be required to submit fingerprints, undergo a criminal record clearance, and a tuberculosis (TB) screening.
• Must pass a thorough background investigation.
• Required to wear issued uniform on duty.
• Required to maintain issued uniform and keep it in presentable condition.
• Required to work evenings and weekends as assigned.

The Selection Process

This is an at-will position, exempt from the provisions of the City of Oakland Civil Service Rules, per Charter Section 902. All applications received will be forwarded to the Oakland Parks, Recreation & Youth Development Department for further consideration.

Disaster Service Workers

All employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
