Job summary

Greater Somerset County YMCA is seeking part-time Sports Instructors to lead multi-sport classes for children, teens, and adults at our Somerset County location. You will create engaging, age-appropriate curriculums and ensure safe, inclusive, and fun programming across basketball, soccer, floor hockey, and related activities.

The role emphasizes the ability to adapt to various age groups, maintain safety, and communicate progress to parents.

Qualifications

• Experience coaching a sport or teaching Physical Education.
• Experience working with children from pre-school to teens.
• Must be at least 17 years old.
• Comfortable with all areas of sports programming including skill development, safety, fair play, and fun.
• Ability to demonstrate and explain sports skills to multiple age groups/abilities.
• Must identify and prevent safety concerns as they arise.
• CPR, First Aid, and AED certification required before start.
• Ability to create and execute lesson plans for each lesson.
• Strong communication skills with participants and parents.
• Consistent attendance, minimal absences to provide reliability.

The Somerset Hills YMCA is looking for athletic sports aficionados to provide children, teens, and adults with quality, multi-sports classes including Basketball, Soccer, Floor Hockey, Recess Games, NERF programming, Pre-School Sports, and more. Sports Instructors should be confident in working with a variety of age groups and helping others achieve their goals. This opportunity is ideal for anyone who works well with multiple age groups, loves all kinds of sports, and is creative and adaptive in needs of the participants of the class. This job is fully on-site, not remote.

Essential Functions

Sports Instructors at the Y should be innovative, creative, fun, and inclusive of all levels / ability types to provide quality programming that encourages learning, healthy living, development of gross motor skills in youth, sportsmanship, and teamwork. Sports Instructors will create and execute their own curriculum to meet the needs of the participants of the class.

Requirements

Qualifications:

• Must have experience coaching a sport or teaching Physical Education. At minimum, must be an athlete with at least 3 years of experience playing in a team sport.
• Must have experience working with children as young as pre-school up to and including older teens.
• Must be at least 17 years of age.
• Should be comfortable with all areas of sports programming including skill development, safety, fair play, sportsmanship, and fun.
• Must be able to demonstrate and explain sports skills that are being taught to multiple age groups / ability levels and be inclusive of all.
• Must be alert and have the quick ability to identify and prevent any safety concerns as they arise.
• Will need to be certified in CPR, First Aid, and AED prior to starting in this position.
• needs to be able to create and execute lesson plans for each lesson that encourages learning, growth, and goal achievement appropriate for each ability level and age group.
• Will need excellent communication skills not only to work with participants but to be able to communicate with parents regarding the progress of their child.
• Must be consistent on a weekly basis and be very minimally absent, if at all, to provide consistency and quality to participants.

Schedule

• All availabilities are welcome to apply. Most classes happen between 4pm-7pm M-F and Saturday and Sunday mornings.
