The Y in Central Maryland is seeking a Sports Instructor to teach sports classes from preschool through adulthood under the Regional Sports Director. You will create engaging learning opportunities while upholding the association’s guidelines and quality standards.

Responsibilities include demonstrating skills, adapting to learners, preparing equipment, and maintaining attendance records. Candidates should have CPR/First Aid certification and complete required trainings before scheduling.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma preferred, but not required.
  • Current CPR/AED/First Aid certification (or O2) within 30 days of hire.
  • Complete new associate training including Child Abuse Prevention before scheduling.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups from all backgrounds.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, especially with children.

  • Explain basic sport skills clearly to participants.

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Regional Sports Director, the Sports Instructor teaches assigned sports classes in accordance with Association guidelines and standards to maintain program quality. The Sports Instructor is responsible for creating engaging learning opportunities within specific sports programs for participants ranging from preschool through adulthood

Essential Functions
  • Obtain CPR/First Aid certification within 90 days of hire.
  • Demonstrate and clearly explain the basic skills and techniques of the sport being taught.
  • Adapt instruction to meet the learning level and abilities of each class.
  • Prepare the teaching area with all necessary equipment and return equipment to the appropriate storage area at the conclusion of each class.
  • Work with individuals and groups within a class setting to help participants correct skills, build confidence, and progress in their abilities.
  • Maintain accurate class attendance records.
  • Follow designated curriculum and program guidelines to ensure required components are met and established standards for progression are followed
Qualifications
Education
  • High School Diploma preferred, but not required.
Experience
  • Current CPR/AED/O2/First Aid certification (or O2 certification within 30 days of hire).
  • Completion of new associate training, including Child Abuse Prevention training, before being scheduled to work.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, particularly when working with children.
Skills

Working Conditions
  • Ability to stand in one area for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds.

  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the position.
  • Use hands, arms, and fingers to perform job duties.

  • Regularly lift and move up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in all YMCA environments, including:
    • Office spaces
    • Indoor and outdoor maintenance/mechanical areas
    • Fitness areas
    • Pool and pool deck areas
    • Camping areas
    • Unimproved outdoor locations
    • Other Y program areas
Accountability

Accountable for completion of assigned goals as measured by the number of people served, cause-driven measures, service satisfaction scores, operating results, and supervisor evaluation of assigned duties.
