Description

The YMCA of Greater Boston is searching for a Sports Instructor to lead sports classes for children and adults of all ages. Classes are scheduled on weekday afternoons and weekend mornings. The candidate must possess excellent child/parent communication skills, expertise in various sports, and the ability to work independently.

Location: Menino YMCA

Key Responsibilities

  • Coach sports programs using provided and self-designed curricula emphasizing skill development, sportsmanship, and YMCA's core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.
  • Demonstrate skills and outcomes to foster learning and development.
  • Maintain group focus, provide positive redirection, and exhibit strong coaching presence.
  • Adapt coaching to the age and skill level of participants, challenging them appropriately.
  • Ensure a safe playing environment by following guidelines and reducing risks.
  • Prepare for each session by reviewing skills, setting up the field, and cleaning up afterward.
  • Provide real-time feedback, encouragement, and motivation to players.
  • Serve as a role model, setting expected behavior standards.
  • Communicate professionally with parents, sharing updates and information.
  • Keep accurate attendance records and follow policies on participation and safety.
  • Attend meetings, trainings, and YMCA events as required.
  • Engage with families, children, and staff to be seen as a community leader.

Skills, Knowledge, and Experience

Education & Experience:

  • One to two years of related experience preferred, such as coaching or volunteering.
  • CPR, First Aid, Emergency Oxygen, and Child Abuse Prevention Training (provided upon hire).

Skills & Competencies:

  • Strong relationship-building and conflict resolution skills.
  • Excellent coaching, instruction, and motivational skills.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage groups of children and/or adults.

Qualities Needed:

  • Energetic, motivated, organized, with a passion for children and sports.
