Position Overview

The Sports Cards Buyer is responsible for sourcing, evaluating, and purchasing sports cards, sealed products, and collections for Layton Sports Cards. This role focuses on acquiring high-quality, in-demand inventory while maintaining strong margins and managing risk. The ideal candidate has deep knowledge of modern and vintage sports cards, grading standards, and current market trends, and can confidently evaluate collections, negotiate pricing, and make strategic buying decisions.

Key Responsibilities

Product Evaluation & Purchasing

• Evaluate and purchase sports card singles, sealed product, slabs, and large collections
• Assess condition, authenticity, grading potential, and market liquidity
• Utilize pricing tools (eBay, Card Ladder, Market Movers, etc.) to determine competitive buy offers
• Negotiate pricing with customers and vendors while protecting company margins
• Make strategic buying decisions based on demand, trend data, and inventory needs

Market Awareness & Strategy

• Maintain a strong understanding of sports card market trends, player performance, and release cycles
• Monitor pricing shifts, grading company trends (PSA, BGS, SGC), and liquidity
• Identify high-demand and investment-grade inventory opportunities
• Adjust buying strategies based on current inventory levels and sales performance

Vendor & Customer Relations

• Build and maintain relationships with collectors, dealers, and repeat sellers
• Represent Layton Sports Cards professionally during buy interactions
• Attend trade nights, card shows, and hobby events when needed
• Support store-level buy programs and promotional initiatives

Inventory Coordination

• Work closely with Inventory & Receiving teams to ensure smooth intake and processing
• Provide accurate documentation and pricing notes for purchased items
• Assist with high-value inventory prep and categorization
• Support pricing alignment with Inventory and Sales leadership

Operational Support

• Assist with floor support during peak retail hours as needed
• Participate in store events, trade nights, and promotional initiatives
• Support additional purchasing-related projects as assigned

Required Skills & Qualifications

• Demonstrated expertise in sports cards (modern and vintage)
• Strong understanding of grading companies and standards (PSA, BGS, SGC)
• Experience using pricing and market analysis tools
• Excellent negotiation and communication skills
• Strong analytical skills and attention to detail
• Ability to make confident, time-sensitive buying decisions
• Reliable, organized, and able to work independently

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior experience in sports card buying, collectibles retail, or acquisitions
• Experience purchasing large collections or high-end inventory
• Familiarity with live break inventory sourcing
• Experience attending card shows or hobby conventions

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand for extended periods
• Ability to lift up to 40–50 lbs. (sealed cases or collections)
• Ability to travel locally or regionally for acquisitions or shows as needed

Work Environment & Schedule

• Retail sports card store environment
• Full-time schedule including weekends and major release days
• Occasional evening availability for trade nights or events
