Position: Medical Records Coding Specialist

The Medical Records Coding Specialist will be responsible for:

  1. Abstracting, sequencing, and assigning diagnosis and procedure codes according to ICD-10-CM coding conventions and UHDDS definitions. Assigning CPT4 procedure codes following the appropriate guidelines, and diagnosis-related groups (DRGs) using specialized computer software. Generating coding worksheets and filing them in the medical record as required by hospital policy.
  2. Performing specialized and technical coding, assisting with billing rejection audits, and addressing case-mix/billing questions.
  3. Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of regulatory and compliance issues related to coding, documentation, and billing.
  4. Communicating with physicians to clarify diagnoses/procedures and sequencing of diagnoses.
  5. Following up on outstanding, uncoded, and incomplete charts, and performing periodic quality control audits.
  6. Assisting with coder education, training, and reviewing work of new coders for quality and accuracy.
  7. Providing leadership in decision-making and prioritization in the absence of the supervisor, and monitoring daily activities to meet billing deadlines.
  8. Training new personnel in coding procedures.

Qualifications:

  • Two years of occupationally specific education or an Associate's degree.
  • Four years of inpatient coding experience in an acute care hospital.
  • Current certification by AHIMA as a CCS or RHIT with CCS.
  • This position is remote, with the exception of CA applicants.
