Job description

The Speech Pathologist is at a novice to advanced beginner level of practice, particularly in a hospital setting. The role involves performing assessments and therapeutic interventions with routine patient populations. This position supports team efforts by executing department and team tasks, problem solving, and intervention skills.

Additional Responsibilities and Opportunities:
  • May orient other allied health professionals to their field after completing their CFY year, pending Department Manager approval.
  • May provide student experiences upon approval of the Coordinator of Student Supervision.
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire:
  • License (or eligibility) from the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Speech and Language Pathologist.
  • Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) in SLP from ASHA or Clinical Fellowship Year candidate.
Requirements for Continued Employment:
  • Current Virginia license as an SLP.
  • Current CCC in SLP.
  • CPR certification.
Experience:
  • New graduates or CFY candidates with less than two years of experience are encouraged to apply.
  • Experience with evaluation and treatment of neurogenic, motor speech, linguistic/cognitive communication, and swallowing disorders.
  • Experience performing swallow studies, including MBS and bedside assessments.
  • Experience planning and executing treatment strategies.
Preferred Experience:
  • Trach management related to swallowing and communication disorders.
  • Management of complex swallowing or communication disorders.
  • Experience in a critical care setting.
  • Experience with computer-based documentation systems.
Education and Training:
  • Master's Degree from an ASHA-accredited program in Speech and Language Pathology.
  • Completion of required learning exchange courses.
  • Graduate clinical rotations in medical settings are preferred.
Independent Actions:

Performs assessments, plans and implements therapy, develops goals, and educates patients and families, under supervision. Guidance is provided regarding clinical skills and professional practice.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

May supervise students if deemed competent and approved by management.

Additional Requirements:

Work hours and schedule are determined by the manager, including potential weekends and holidays based on staffing needs.

Physical and Sensory Requirements:
  • Lifting 20-50 lbs.
  • Prolonged standing, sitting, walking, climbing.
  • Repetitive motions, strong recall, reasoning, problem solving, hearing, clear speech, legible writing, reading, logical thinking.
  • Ability to handle a fast-paced, noisy environment and adapt to change.
