Distinguishing Features of the Class:

This is a technical, professional position responsible for providing speech therapy by administering prescribed treatment and diagnostic tests to children with disabilities ages birth up to age 5. Work is performed under general supervision with leeway allowed for the use of independent judgment in the performance of professional responsibilities. Supervision of others is not normally a function of this position. Does related work as required.

Typical Work Activities:
  • Works with children ages birth up to age 5 in the Early Intervention and preschool special education programs.
  • Administers diagnostic tests for hearing, articulation, connected speech, discrimination, ability to be stimulated, speech and verbal comprehension, and swallowing assessments.
  • Evaluates findings from speech, hearing, and swallowing assessments and provides recommendations for services and treatment based on evaluation findings.
  • Interprets findings to other team members, the client, and the client’s family as needed.
  • Confers with team members, the client, and the client’s family to develop a treatment plan.
  • Provides speech therapy services, develops remedial programs, and communicates results of swallowing assessments.
  • Works with dietary regarding food consistency or revisions, coordinates follow-up services, and instructs clients on hearing aid use and maintenance.
  • Prepares evaluations, progress reports, updates, and annual evaluations.
  • Attends meetings regarding services and maintains records for each client serviced.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Personal Characteristics:

Thorough knowledge of speech and hearing disorders principles and practices; good knowledge of dysphagia; proficiency with speech therapy equipment; understanding of socio-economic factors affecting speech disabilities; ability to administer tests, communicate effectively, and exhibit patience and tact; physical condition suitable for the demands of the position.

Minimum Qualifications:

Graduation from a college or university with a master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology or Communication Sciences & Disorders AND:

  • NYS Licensed in Speech-Language Pathology OR
  • Eligibility for NYS license within one year of employment with appropriate supervision.

Note: Degree must be from an accredited institution. If awarded outside the U.S., provide verification of equivalency and pay the evaluation fee.

Special Requirements:

For school district appointment, must obtain clearance from the State Education Department via fingerprint and criminal background check.
