Job summary

RWJBarnabas Health's Speech-Language Pathology department seeks a Speech-Language Pathologist to provide comprehensive services in an outpatient setting for pediatric and adult patients. You will develop individualized treatment plans and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to promote communication, cognition, swallowing, and quality of life.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology from a CAA-accredited program.
  • NJ Speech-Language Pathology license or temporary license required.
  • CCC-SLP certification preferred or required based on position; BLS certification required.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive speech-language and swallowing evaluations and assessments.
  • Develop individualized, evidence-based treatment plans.
  • Provide therapy interventions for communication, language, cognitive, speech, voice, and swallowing disorders.
  • Collaborate with physicians, therapists, nurses and other team members.
  • Educate patients and families on strategies and home programs.
  • Develop discharge plans and home programs for continued progress.
  • Accurately document evaluations, treatment notes, progress, discharge summaries and billing records.
  • Document services and charges per departmental policy and regulatory requirements.
  • Recommend adaptive equipment and provide education to maximize safety and independence.
  • Supervise students and clinical fellows when applicable.
  • Maintain equipment, materials, and supplies for the department.
  • Participate in continuing education and meetings while maintaining competencies.
  • Meet productivity expectations with compassionate, patient-centered care.

Speech-Language Pathologist - RWJBarnabas Health

At RWJBarnabas Health, Speech-Language Pathologists play an essential role in helping patients improve communication, cognition, swallowing, and overall quality of life. As a member of our rehabilitation team, you will provide comprehensive speech-language pathology services to pediatric and adult patients with a wide range of communication, cognitive, speech, voice, language, and swallowing disorders in an outpatient setting. Working collaboratively with patients, families, physicians, and interdisciplinary team members, you will develop individualized treatment plans that promote functional independence, maximize outcomes, and support each patient's unique rehabilitation goals. A typical day for a Speech-Language Pathologist may include:
  • Conducting comprehensive speech-language and swallowing evaluations, re-evaluations, and standardized assessments to identify communication, cognitive, voice, speech, language, and dysphagia needs.
  • Developing and implementing individualized, evidence-based treatment plans that support each patient's functional goals and maximize independence.
  • Providing skilled therapy interventions for patients, with communication, language, cognitive, speech, voice, and swallowing disorders across diverse outpatient populations.
  • Collaborating with physicians, occupational therapists, physical therapists, nurses, social workers, and other interdisciplinary team members to coordinate comprehensive patient care.
  • Educating patients, families, and caregivers on therapeutic strategies, home exercise programs, compensatory techniques, adaptive equipment, and recommendations that support continued progress outside of therapy sessions.
  • Developing appropriate discharge plans and home programs that promote continued functional improvement and successful transition following therapy.
  • Completing timely and accurate clinical documentation, including evaluations, treatment notes, progress reports, discharge summaries, billing documentation, and other required medical records in accordance with RWJBarnabas Health policies and professional practice standards.
  • Accurately documenting therapy services and associated charges in accordance with departmental policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Recommending adaptive equipment and providing patient and caregiver education to maximize safety, communication, swallowing function, and independence.
  • Supervising speech-language pathology students and clinical fellows, when applicable, by providing mentorship, constructive feedback, and formal performance evaluations.
  • Assisting with the maintenance, organization, and recommendations for departmental treatment equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Participating in continuing education, mandatory training, staff meetings, and professional development activities while maintaining clinical competencies.
  • Meeting productivity expectations while providing compassionate, patient-centered care and representing RWJBarnabas Health with professionalism and clinical excellence.

To Be Considered:

To be considered for this opportunity, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Education: Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology from a program accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA).
  • Licensure: Current and unrestricted New Jersey Speech-Language Pathology license or temporary license issued by the State of New Jersey.
  • Certification: Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP) from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) preferred or required based on position. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • Experience: Previous outpatient, pediatric, rehabilitation, or medical speech-language pathology experience is preferred. Clinical Fellowship (CF) candidates and new graduates may be considered for select opportunities based on department needs.
  • Skills: Demonstrated knowledge of speech-language, cognitive-communication, voice, and swallowing evaluation techniques; evidence-based treatment planning; dysphagia management; patient and family education; adaptive equipment recommendations; clinical documentation; interdisciplinary collaboration; and outpatient rehabilitation practices.
  • Schedule: Ability to work a full-time schedule and participate in required meetings, continuing education, and professional development activities.
