Job Description

Reports to: VBISD Early Childhood Supervisor

Location of Work:

Offsite: Early Childhood Program

Base Location: Special Services Building, Lawrence, MI 49064

Job Goals:

The job goals of the Speech & Language Pathologist are to provide in‑home direct service and consultative support to ensure timely and appropriate special education services for children birth to three in the natural environment. Provide family‑centered services to children birth‑3 eligible for Early On in keeping with the Principles of Early Intervention. Conduct comprehensive evaluations to determine eligibility for Early On and Michigan Mandated Special Education (MMSE).

Qualifications

Education:

  • Master’s degree in speech and language pathology required

Certification:

  • Michigan teaching certificate with speech and language endorsement required
  • OR
  • Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech Pathology from the American Speech, Language and Hearing Association required

Work Experience:

  • Previous experience working with families and children birth to age 3 preferred.
  • Previous experience evaluating the language development of young children, developing individualized family service plans (IFSPs) and providing consultative services preferred.
Essential Job Functions
  • Participate as an active member of a multi-disciplinary team to conduct comprehensive evaluations of children birth to 3 in order to determine eligibility for Early On and/or MMSE.
  • Collaboratively develop Individualized Family Service Plans (IFSP) in keeping with the Key Principles of Early Intervention.
  • Provide early intervention services to students with IFSPs in accordance with their Individualized Family Service Plan and in keeping with the Key Principles of Early Intervention.
  • Effectively collaborate with colleagues to support students overall development.
  • Participate in/coordinate transitions with relevant providers as children move from Early On to MMSE services.
  • Effectively communicate, consult and team with parents, staff, agencies and others in a professional and timely manner.
  • Keep up to date with best practices, research, and trends regarding Early Childhood, Early On and Early Intervention services in general and specifically as they relate to the scope of practice for Early Childhood Special Education Teachers.
  • Complete responsibilities within agreed upon or established timelines.
  • Adhere to Van Buren ISD and Early Childhood policies, process and procedures.
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Valid driver's license required.
Skills
  • Working knowledge of:
    • Early Childhood Development
    • IDEA and Michigan Rules and Regulations
    • Key Principles of Early Intervention
    • DEC Recommended Practices
    • Evaluation Instruments (IDA, DAYC‑2, etc)
    • Evidence Based Practices for Early Intervention (Including Primary Service Provider Model, Coaching, etc).
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills, both orally and in writing, and ability to communicate and share information.
  • Experience participating with multidisciplinary evaluation teams.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with administrators, parents, teachers, other ancillary team members, para‑professionals, mental health clinicians, etc.
  • Working knowledge of trauma‑informed practices.
  • Knowledge of state and federal special education laws.
  • Ability to work effectively, make decisions, and problem solve collaboratively within a team and in partnership with local district and agency staff.
  • Ability to present effective workshops and meetings.
  • Take initiative and work independently when given a variety of responsibilities and assigned tasks.
  • Proficient with computer software programs including Microsoft Office, Google, Excel, PowerPoint, social media, and internet software applications.
  • General professional skills, including a willingness to:
    • Make child‑centered decisions.
    • Assume positive intentions when working with others.
    • Adhere to federal, state and VBISD policies and procedures.
    • Model VBISD guidelines: Respect, Integrity, Compassion and Excellence.
    • Complete assigned responsibilities within agreed upon timelines.
    • Seek ongoing professional learning and accept feedback in a professional way.
    • Perform additional tasks, responsibilities and duties as assigned by the Director of Early Childhood.

Terms of Employment: As per master agreement and provisions established by the Van Buren Board of Education.

Position is open until filled.
