Job summary

Van Buren Board of Education is seeking a Speech-Language Pathologist to provide comprehensive services at the Bert Goens Learning Center and assigned local schools in Lawrence, MI. Travel between buildings is required.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology from an accredited institution.
  • Licensed Michigan SLP or eligibility with CCC-SLP preferred; valid driver’s license.
  • Experience in school-based settings with children who have complex communication needs.
  • Strong collaboration with families, educators, and related service providers.

  • Provide comprehensive speech-language services to students at the Center and local district schools.

  • Offer staff training on communication strategies and evidence-based practices.
  • Ensure IDEA, MARSE, and district policy compliance and confidentiality.

Job description

Speech and Language Pathologist (Center-Based Program & Local District Services) – Beginning August 2026

Location: Bert Goens Learning Center, 705 S Paw Paw Street, Lawrence, MI 49064. Offsite: Maple Creek Education Center/Bangor PS. Travel between assigned buildings required.

Reports to: Learning Center Principal

Responsibilities

The Speech-Language Pathologist will provide comprehensive speech-language services to students with disabilities attending the Bert Goens Learning Center and assigned local district schools. Key duties include:

  • Conducting speech-language evaluations, screenings, and reevaluations to determine eligibility and educational needs.
  • Participating as an active member of multidisciplinary teams to develop and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
  • Providing direct, consultative, and collaborative speech-language services in accordance with student IEPs.
  • Delivering services to students at the Bert Goens Learning Center and assigned local district schools.
  • Assessing, implementing, and supporting Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems and other assistive technology as appropriate.
  • Monitoring student progress, maintaining data, and completing required documentation, progress reports, and Medicaid billing (when applicable) within established timelines.
  • Collaborating with families, educators, related service providers, and community agencies to support student communication and educational success.
  • Providing consultation and training to staff regarding communication strategies, accommodations, and evidence-based practices.
  • Ensuring compliance with IDEA, MARSE, district policies, and professional ethical standards while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Demonstrating VBISD Guiding Principles of Respect, Integrity, Compassion, and Excellence, participating in professional learning, and performing additional duties as assigned by the Special Education Supervisor.
  • Maintaining a valid driver's license.
Qualifications
  • Education: Master’s Degree in Speech-Language Pathology from an accredited institution.
  • Licensure & Certification: Valid Michigan Speech-Language Pathologist License; Michigan Department of Education School Speech-Language Pathologist Approval (or eligibility); Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC‑SLP) from ASHA preferred; Valid Michigan driver’s license.
  • Experience: Preferred experience providing speech-language services in a school setting; working with students with moderate to severe cognitive impairments, autism spectrum disorder, multiple disabilities, and complex communication needs; implementing AAC systems.
  • Skills: Knowledge of IDEA, MARSE, Section 504, and Michigan special education procedures; strong evidence-based assessment and intervention practices; ability to administer, interpret, and communicate formal and informal evaluations; AAC assessment and staff training experience; development of functional communication systems; excellent collaboration and consultation skills; strong written, verbal, organizational, and time management skills; proficiency with electronic IEP systems, progress monitoring, and educational technology.
