Job summary

Montgomery-Public-Schools is seeking a Paraprofessional I for a 187-day assignment at Pike Road School. Reports to the Principal and supports instructional, behavioral, and student services to maximize achievement.

Responsibilities include assisting with small group instruction, preparing materials, and monitoring student behavior. Requires an Associate degree or 48 semester hours, strong communication, and ability to work in a demanding environment.

LOCATION: Pike Road School as assigned

REPORTS TO: Principal

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

TERMS: 187-Day appointment compensated in accordance with the board-approved salary schedule

JOB GOAL:
  • To assist the teacher in providing instructional, behavioral, and support services for maximum student achievement and/or attainment.
  • To assist the teacher in planning and implementing learning experiences for students.
  • To assist the teacher in developing a safe, healthy learning environment.
  • To assist the teacher in providing small group instruction.
  • To assist the teacher with the preparation and organization of instructional materials.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Associate’s degree, or verification of 48 semester hours from an accredited college, or a passing score on the ACT WorkKeys Assessment.
  2. Ability to meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification/licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457
  3. Demonstrated success in relevant work experience.
  4. Ability and willingness to work in a highly demanding, stressful environment.
  5. Demonstrated proficiency in oral and written communication with students, teachers, and others.
  6. Effective interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on communication and collaboration with a wide variety of people and groups.
  7. Ability to identify and solve problems as a productive team member.
  8. Ability to carry out verbal and written instructions.
  9. Physical strength, agility, dexterity, acuity, and mobility to perform job responsibilities.

  13. Ability to stand, walk, stoop, and assist with student toileting and specific hygiene needs.
  14. Ability to transfer students, feed students, and provide physical intervention when required.

  16. Ability to work flexible hours as needed to provide adult assistance on special education buses.
  17. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may require.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Demonstrates support for the school system, its vision, goals, and priorities.
  2. Helps students to use books, computers, classroom materials, and other equipment.
  3. Implements all components of the behavior plans of individual students consistent with the teacher's implementation instructions.
  4. Presents lessons or portions of lessons to a student or a group of students, checks the accuracy of work, and presents additional assignments as directed by the teacher.
  5. Applies prompting techniques and learning interventions as directed by the Teacher.
  6. Communicates relevant observations of student needs & behaviors to the Teacher.
  7. Assists teachers in maintaining discipline and encouraging acceptable student behavior.
  8. Assists in managing student behavior, including crisis intervention when needed, such as restraining disruptive or physically dangerous students within the guidelines of crisis intervention training.
  9. Assists teacher in keeping routine records related to attendance, grades, test scores, or behavior as assigned.
  10. Assists in monitoring an in-school suspension program at the junior high and/or high school level.
  11. Holds assigned students accountable to positive, appropriate behavioral expectations.
  12. Keeps class roster of and attendance records of assigned students.
  13. Supervises assigned students at all times.
  14. Serves as a liaison between teachers and assigned students, relaying materials, assignments, instructions, and other communication between teachers, administrators, and assigned students
  15. Assists teachers on field trips by helping students with physical needs, maintaining discipline, and reinforcing learning situations.
  16. Assists bus drivers, when needed, in maintaining discipline and responding to the physical needs of students.
  17. Supervises groups of students in the temporary absence of the responsible teacher.
  18. Facilitates the use of adaptive devices, timers, communication devices, mobility equipment such as leg braces, walkers, mobile standers, and tricycles, and other tools used by staff.
  19. Transfers students in and out of holding or locomotive devices and on and off buses.
  20. Assists students with all aspects of toileting, which may include diapering, lifting on and off the toilet, changing tables, and mats.
  21. Assists with the movement of students with special needs as required (positioning, lifting, transferring, and physical intervention).
  22. Obtains food from the cafeteria, serves food, feeds students, and/or assists them to feed themselves.
  23. Assists teachers in directing activities and acts as a play leader for assigned groups of students.
  24. Performs basic health, first aid, or basic nursing care for students as directed or authorized by a school nurse.
  25. Attends IEP meetings, if requested.
  26. Maintains appropriate confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters.
  27. Maintains ethical practices and relationships with parents and stakeholders.
  28. Performs duties courteously and professionally.
  29. Demonstrates initiative in identifying potential problems and/or opportunities for improvement in areas of responsibility.
  30. Engages in professional growth and demonstrates professional ethics and effective leadership.
  31. Report potential problems, unusual events, or work irregularities to appropriate administrative or supervisory personnel.
  32. Responds to inquiries, requests, constructive feedback, concerns, and/or complaints in a timely and positive manner.
  33. Maintains and submits reports, records, and correspondence in a timely and accurate manner.
  34. Transfers with a student to another education setting/site when requested in accordance with the school system policies governing employee transfers.
  35. Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local Board policies, and state, federal, and local regulations.
  36. Reports absences and takes leave in accordance with Board policies and procedures.
  37. Performs other job-related duties as assigned by supervisor(s).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently; and/or up to 10 pounds of force as needed to move objects.

EVALUATION: Job performance will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the State Department of Education and/or Pike Road Board of Education policy on evaluation of classified personnel.
