Job summary

UPMC Hamot is seeking a Specimen Processor to join the lab team. The role is flex full-time, 12:15pm–8:45pm with rotating weekends and holidays, focusing on receiving, sorting, identifying, processing, and distributing specimens, and entering data into the LIS.

The position requires a high school diploma or equivalent, 3–6 months in a clinical lab or service environment, and solid oral and written communication. Training and safety compliance are integral parts of the job.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • 3–6 months of experience in a clinical laboratory, physician's office, or medical environment preferred.
  • 3–6 months of experience in a service environment including call center or distribution/fulfillment center preferred.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate service orientation by being courteous, respectful and proactive in helping the department complete work.
  • Monitor pneumatic tube and courier deliveries for timely processing of specimens.
  • Investigate and resolve specimen problems; request assistance when needed.
  • Label aliquot tubes and transfer as defined by policy; store samples at proper temperatures.
  • Enter specimen receive times into the LIS and answer inquiries about results and normal ranges.
  • Handle biohazardous samples safely following health and safety regulations.
  • Verify specimens against requisitions and LIS data.
  • Prepare and send specimens to outside locations as needed.
  • Participate in training of new laboratory specimen processors.
