This position is responsible for the receipt of biological specimens into the department, their proper entry into the company’s computer system, the preparation of samples for analytical testing, the distribution of these specimens to the proper analytical area, and archiving specimens after testing. This position reports to Specimen Processing Supervisor, and takes direction from Senior Specimen Preparation Technicians, and Specimen Preparation Coordinators.
Departmental responsibility only. Customers are primarily internal to the organization. Does come into contact with outside vendors, couriers, and professionals who bring specimens to the laboratory.
Ability to stand, walk, bend, squat, reach, and stretch frequently. Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds. Must use standard precautions due to threat of exposure to blood and body fluids. Able to communicate effectively through reading, writing, and speaking in person or on telephone. May require periodic use of personal computer.
Minimum age requirement of 18.
Good reading, writing and math abilities are required.
Oral and written communication skills sufficient to understand written and spoken instructions in English.
Good organization skills are also required.
Must meet all training competency qualifications for Specimen Preparation Technician within six months of hire.
Six (6) months’ experience in a laboratory or key encoding environment.
High School Diploma or equivalent GED exam or other means.
Typing/keyboarding skills of minimum 25 wpm, demonstrated by completion of a typing/keyboarding test.
