Under the direction of the Program Director, the Specialty Camp Counselor-Teen Camp Counselor is responsible for the overall operations, program management, and Camp Curriculum. This includes supervising Teen participants ages 12-17 and developing a rapport with their parents. In addition, the individual in this position is responsible for ensuring that the program adheres to the YMCA of South Florida's Risk Management policies and procedures.

Essential Functions/ Job Duties:

  • Develop and plan age-appropriate activities for the Specialty Camp component, including but not limited to Enrichments, Teambuilding, Leadership skills, Arts and Crafts, Performing Arts, and/or Outdoor Education.
  • Develop lesson plans for the Teen Camp.
  • Ensure compliance with requirements, including staffing appropriately and monitoring day-to-day operations, activities, curriculum planning, and programming implementation.
  • Create a positive atmosphere that boosts self-esteem and general self-concept of all participants.
  • Communicate clearly and regularly with parents about the program and their child's participation.
  • Partner with facility personnel to ensure a cohesive relationship is maintained and the facility is used properly.
  • Monitor equipment and facilities for safety and security purposes.
  • Work with the Program Director to ensure compliance with all required standards.
  • Maintain close communication with the Program Director regarding all issues concerning the program.
  • Uphold all YMCA policies and Risk Management/Safety procedures, reporting all incidents and accidents within 24 hours to the Program Director/corporate office.
  • Document behavior issues and/or incidents daily, as needed.
  • Ensure that proper staff-to-child ratios are always maintained and report discrepancies to the Director, as needed.
  • Demonstrate, model, and tailor the program to meet the needs of individual children, considering their interests, disabilities, special talents, and developmentally appropriate activities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications, Skills, and Abilities/ Position Requirements:

  • A high school diploma or GED.
  • Experience with Specialty Camps.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • A minimum of two years' work experience with school-aged children.
  • Ability to relate to both children and adults, and understand, practice, and model YMCA Character Development values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.
  • Must be able to implement curriculums and provide instruction to participants at a basic level; must excel in both written and verbal communication.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact with individuals at all levels.
  • First Aid and CPR certification within 30 days of being hired.

  • Works in an indoor/outdoor environment.
  • May work in outside weather conditions, occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions.

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
  • Will be required to drive for meetings, training, and other work-related duties.
  • Exposure to blood-borne pathogens requires use of personal protective equipment.

Physical Demands

  • Being in good physical health with full range of body motion, including manual and finger dexterity and eye/hand coordination. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.
  • Occasionally requires working under stressful conditions or working irregular hours.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds with or without assistance.
  • Job duties require 10% sitting, 20% walking, and 70% standing.
  • Intermittent physical activity including walking, standing, sitting, lifting, and supporting participants.
  • Incumbents will be exposed to viruses, disease, and infection from program participants.
  • Incumbents may be required to work at any YMCA facility and therefore be responsible for their own transportation.
