Job summary

CenterPoint Energy in Houston, TX is seeking a Lead Corporate Communications Specialist to manage internal and external plans, protect and enhance the company’s reputation, and coordinate messaging across stakeholders.

The role demands strategic guidance to leadership, multi-channel execution, media interaction, and leadership of communications initiatives that support business goals. The candidate will have senior-level communications experience and strong writing and storytelling skills.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 7 years of communications as a company/organization spokesperson
  • Integrated, multi-channel communications experience
  • Experience leading initiatives with significant business impact
  • Experience as project lead or task force member on high-impact projects
  • Experience producing news releases, statements, talking points, speeches
  • Experience supporting senior executives in a corporate environment
  • Proven success developing and executing strategic communications plans
  • Experience leading enterprise-wide or large-scale change communications
  • Excellent written, verbal, presentation, and storytelling skills
  • Ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously

Responsibilities

Job Summary

Collaborates within the Corporate Communications department and with internal and external stakeholders to maintain and enhance CenterPoint Energy's reputation, brand and community and environmental stewardship. The lead corporate communication specialist will be responsible for the development, management and execution of internal and external communication plans for CenterPoint Energy's footprint. This role with have a focus on implementing best practices, protecting and enhancing the company's favorable reputation and image.

Essential Functions
  • Serves as the lead Corporate Communications representative for the region, providing strategic guidance, identifying effective tactics and evaluating results.
  • Provides proactive counsel on strategic direction to corporate leadership, business leaders, colleagues and other stakeholders, with a focus on achieving business objectives.
  • Develops and implements strategic internal and external communication plans. Includes developing key messages, strategies, timing and specific channels, and incorporating analytics and measurement for results.
  • Develops and executes a range of communications strategies and tactics in support of CenterPoint Energy's business imperatives; positions the company's services and capabilities with key audiences and stakeholders.
  • Develops and implements strategic communications plans to support regulatory and government affairs initiatives highlighting issues pertaining to the company's business goals and interests.
  • Acts as company spokesperson for a region, conducting interviews with media and engaging the public at business meetings and events. Serves as after-hours media duty representative.
  • Coordinates media and public speaking training programs for selected CenterPoint Energy executives, selected managers and staff who may be involved in addressing external audiences, including the news media, key opinion and thought groups and other external stakeholders.
  • Develops and manages the production of a wide variety of communication materials, including news releases, fact sheets, articles, presentations, speeches, videos, emails, intranet articles, brochures, posters, digital signage, etc.
  • Serves on the emergency response communications team including working in Incident Command System. May work extensive hours at CenterPoint Energy locations during a crisis response.
Education Description
  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, English, or related field.
Experience
  • Minimum 7 years of communications as a company/organization spokesperson
  • Integrated, multi-channel communications experience
  • Experience leading initiatives to solve significant problems/issues including interpreting complex information and developing recommendations for management consideration
  • Experience serving as a project lead or task force member on projects and/or issues having significant impact on the business
  • Experience producing communication materials (e.g. news releases, statements, key messages, talking points, speeches, etc.)
  • Experience supporting senior executives and leadership teams in a corporate environment.
  • Demonstrated success developing and executing strategic communications plans.
  • Experience leading enterprise-wide or large-scale change communication initiatives.
  • Excellent written, verbal, presentation, and storytelling skills.
  • Experience managing multiple complex projects simultaneously.
