Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or equivalent with relevant experience.
  • Minimum 6 years electrical design experience or 4 years with advanced degree.
  • 4+ years developing electronics for DoD/military markets.
  • 5+ years PCB/CCA development using Orcad, Altium or equivalent.

Responsibilities

  • PCB/CCA development including schematic capture, layout, routing and signal integrity analysis.
  • Hardware development including subsystem architecture and analog board design.
  • Develop analog circuits with component selection and SPICE simulation.
  • Test, debug and verify hardware designs; analyze power, stress and tolerances.
  • Prepare technical presentations for customers and management; support certifications.

Requirements

JOB SUMMARY

The Specialist, Electrical Engineering, is an integral member of the ALST Engineering team. This individual is responsible for Circuit Card Assembly (CCA) development, circuit design, electrical system and subsystem architecture, analysis, system diagrams, and component selection for the electronics associated with advanced laser systems.

This is an onsite position and requires the individual to have a well-rounded background with knowledge of circuit card development and analog and digital engineering practices. He / she must possess the ability to work with design and development engineers and production technicians to support product development, verification, transition into manufacturing, and to support designs in production.

COMPLEXITY & PROBLEM SOLVING

Works on problems of diverse scope where analysis of information requires evaluation of identifiable factors. Devises solutions based on limited information and precedent and adapts existing approaches to resolve issues. Uses evaluation, judgment, and interpretation to select right course of action. Work is done independently and is reviewed at critical points.

COLLABORATION & INTERACTION

Enhances relationships and networks with senior internal/external partners who are not familiar with the subject matter often requiring persuasion. Adapts style to differing audiences and often advises others on difficult matters.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Printed Circuit Board (PCB) / Circuit Card Assembly (CCA) development, including PCB stackup, schematic capture, component placement, routing, and signal integrity analysis.
  • Hardware development to include subsystem architecture, analog hardware design, board-level block diagrams, and system wiring diagrams.
  • Develop analog circuits, including component selection and circuit simulation.
  • Test and debug hardware designs.
  • Analysis of power consumption, component stress, worst case tolerances, and reliability.
  • Ability to develop and make technical presentations to customers and to internal management and peers.
  • Supervise and/or provide guidance in design certification tests and document results.
  • Troubleshoot component failures and investigate root causes of failures in system applications.
  • Recommend design improvements for failure prevention.
  • Monitors and defines priorities for the projects he/she is working on a daily basis.
  • Responsible for ensuring that specified quality standards are met for all tasks completed.

  • Performs job duties in a manner that maintains compliance with environmental, health and safety regulations, policies and procedures

REQUIRED CAPABILITIES
  • U.S. Citizenship required due to government contract requirements.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain US security clearance.
  • Able to work weekends and evenings as required to meet company objectives.
  • Able to travel nationally / internationally on an as needed basis.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with a wide array of professional levels and functions.
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot electrical issues and resolve problems on a variety of products.
  • Knowledgeable of Military Specifications/Standards.
  • Ability to use lab equipment such as oscilloscopes, power supplies and pulse generators.
  • Hands on experience with circuit boards including soldering and debug.
  • Possess exceptional communication (both oral and written) and listening skills, with a strong orientation to details, and the ability to make quick, informed decisions.
  • Must be able to effectively flow down system requirements into a system test plan.
  • Demonstrated ability to make presentations to customers, government personnel and senior management team members.
  • Strong relationship building skills at all levels of an organization and the ability to work effectively across functions.
  • Proven success in a fast-paced development and manufacturing environment and possess a willingness to take ownership, accept accountability, and thrive under pressure.
  • Experience with Laser-based systems electronics is a plus
  • Experience with FPGA development is a plus
  • Embedded software development experience is a plus
  • Experience with Graphical User Interface (GUI) development, National Instruments LabWindows and LabView is a plus.
  • Experience EMC design for compliance is a plus.
EDUCATION/ EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and a minimum of 6 years or Graduate degree and minimum of 4 years of prior relevant experience or equivalent combination of experience and education
  • 6+ years of electrical design experience
  • 5+ years’ experience with PCB / CCA development - Orcad, Altium or equivalent schematic capture tools; Serial and digital interfaces; SPI, I2C, RS-422
  • 4+ years’ experience with analog circuit and power supply design and development - SPICE circuit simulation; Component selection
  • 4+ years’ experience developing electronics for the DoD / military market
