The Specialist Controls Engineer serves as a senior technical resource responsible for defining control system architecture, leading complex automation programs, and driving standardization across multiple material handling projects. This role combines technical strategy, cross-functional collaboration, and organizational impact. The Specialist Controls Engineer provides technical oversight and mentorship, ensuring scalable, high-quality control system solutions that meet customer, operational, and financial objectives.

Responsibilities
  • Define and maintain control system architecture, standards, and best practices, including development of reusable code libraries, templates, and modular design approaches
  • Lead the design, development, deployment, and commissioning of complex PLC and HMI systems for material handling applications
  • Provide technical oversight and lead design reviews for large-scale and high-risk projects, ensuring robust system integration across controls, interfaces, and third-party equipment
  • Lead controls engineering scope across multiple concurrent projects or programs, ensuring on-time, on-budget delivery, including risk identification and mitigation
  • Support ROM estimates, proposals, and technical solution development, including resource planning and workload allocation
  • Oversee system validation, integration testing, and site acceptance testing (SAT), ensuring adherence to quality, testing, and documentation standards
  • Drive improvements in engineering and commissioning efficiency, including troubleshooting escalation support and optimization of startup and field execution performance
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with internal teams and external stakeholders, while mentoring and developing junior engineers through coaching and training initiatives
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, controls engineering, mechatronics, or related field with 10 years of experience in controls engineering within material handling, automation, or related industry
  • Master’s degree in a related engineering discipline is preferred and may be considered in place of up to two years of experience
  • Professional certifications such as Certified Automation Professional (CAP) or TUV Functional Safety Engineer are preferred
  • Advanced proficiency with Rockwell Automation (ControlLogix, GuardLogix, Studio 5000) and Siemens platforms (TIA Portal, S7)
  • Advanced knowledge of industrial networks, including EtherNet/IP, Profinet, and safety networks
  • Strong experience in control system architecture, integration, and large-scale material handling systems (sortation, conveyors, AS/RS, robotics)
  • Strong experience with HMI/SCADA development, system visualization, and software development lifecycle (SDLC), testing, and quality assurance processes
  • Knowledge of electrical design principles, device selection, and control panel integration
  • Proven ability to lead technical direction and manage project scope, schedules, and budgets across multiple concurrent projects or programs
  • Strong technical decision-making and stakeholder influence skills, with the ability to communicate complex concepts to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment and travel domestically up to 60% to support commissioning, customer meetings, and critical project phases

Working environment

Körber is pioneering cutting-edge sorting technology and solutions for mail and parcel automation across Europe, North America, and Asia. The Parcel Logistics team is based in Irving, Texas, USA. This full-time, exempt position offers a hybrid schedule—three days in-office for candidates in Dallas–Fort Worth, TX. Candidates in other locations will work remotely.
