Trinity Metro has an immediate opening for a Bus Shop Specialist. T h e Bus Sho p Specialist is responsible for ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of transit buses and fleet equipment through advanced diagnostics, preventive maintenance, inspections, and repair services. This position performs complex mechanical, electrical, electronic, HVAC, and computerized diagnostics and repairs on transit buses and related equipment while supporting the overall readiness and reliability of the transit fleet.
The Transit Bus Specialist serves as a technical resource for other maintenance personnel and assists technicians with difficult, complex, and specialized repairs. The position works closely with the Shop Supervisor, Quality Assurance personnel, Training staff, Operations, and other support departments to maintain high maintenance standards, improve technician performance, reduce vehicle downtime, and ensure buses are safe and available for revenue service.
The incumbent may coordinate with bus manufacturers, component manufacturers, outside vendors, technical representatives, and other industry resources to diagnose and resolve difficult repair issues.
This is an advanced-level transit maintenance position intended for individuals who have demonstrated strong mechanical and electrical aptitude, advanced diagnostic capabilities, sound judgment, leadership ability, and an uncompromising commitment to passenger safety, fleet reliability, and quality workmanship.
Responsibilities:
- Perform advanced diagnostics, preventive maintenance, inspections, adjustments, and repairs on transit buses and related fleet equipment, including diesel, gasoline, CNG, hybrid, electric, and other alternative-fuel vehicles.
- Diagnose and repair complex mechanical, electrical, electronic, pneumatic, hydraulic, HVAC, suspension, braking, steering, drivetrain, propulsion, multiplex, communication, and computerized vehicle systems.
- Diagnose and repair bus-specific systems and components, including wheelchair ramps and lifts, kneeling systems, destination signs, fare equipment, passenger doors, air systems, electrical controls, instrumentation, and other passenger-service equipment.
- Troubleshoot advanced electrical and electronic faults using diagnostic software, scan tools, multimeters, electrical test equipment, wiring diagrams, schematics, service manuals, and manufacturer technical information.
- Assist less-experienced technicians with difficult or specialized repairs and provide hands-on technical guidance to improve diagnostic accuracy, repair quality, and shop capabilities.
- Inspect buses and equipment to identify safety concerns, component wear, defects, potential failures, and required repairs. Determine whether vehicles are suitable for safe return to revenue service.
- Identify required parts, specialty tools, diagnostic equipment, shop equipment, and technical resources needed to complete repairs efficiently and safely.
- Complete assigned repairs accurately and within established timeframes while minimizing vehicle downtime and supporting daily transit service requirements.
- Perform road calls, field diagnostics, emergency repairs, disabled-bus assistance, and vehicle recovery support as required by transit operations.
- Respond to difficult or recurring vehicle defects and assist management in identifying root causes and corrective actions.
- Work with manufacturers, vendors, technical support representatives, and other resources when specialized diagnostic assistance or warranty support is required.
- Support vehicle inspections, safety campaigns, recalls, component replacements, retrofit programs, and other fleet reliability initiatives.
- Follow all applicable safety procedures, environmental requirements, lockout/tagout procedures, hazardous-energy controls, manufacturer procedures, and transit agency maintenance policies.
- Maintain accurate work orders, inspection reports, maintenance records, parts information, diagnostic findings, and other required documentation.
- Communicate clearly with supervisors, technicians, Operations personnel, vendors, and support departments regarding vehicle condition, repair status, safety concerns, and technical issues.
- Share technical knowledge and repair techniques with other technicians and assist with on-the-job training and development.
- Stay current with evolving transit bus technology, including electric propulsion, hybrid systems, alternative fuels, advanced driver-assistance systems, multiplex electronics, battery systems, and computerized vehicle controls.
- Participate in manufacturer training, technical training, safety training, and continuing education as required.
- Maintain a clean, safe, organized, and professional maintenance work area.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements:
- Strong knowledge of transit bus mechanical, electrical, electronic, pneumatic, hydraulic, HVAC, braking, steering, suspension, drivetrain, propulsion, and computerized systems.
- Demonstrated ability to diagnose complex vehicle problems using diagnostic software, scan tools, electrical test equipment, wiring diagrams, schematics, and technical service information.
- Ability to safely operate and work around heavy transit buses, shop equipment, lifting equipment, and specialized maintenance tools.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while also functioning effectively as part of a maintenance team.
- Strong communication, troubleshooting, organizational, and technical leadership skills.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, wiring diagrams, schematics, service information, and repair procedures.
- Ability to obtain and maintain all required licenses, certifications, and qualifications applicable to the position.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license and Commercial Driver's License (CDL), as required.
- Ability to obtain and maintain EPA 608/609 certification, as applicable.
- Ability to pass required physical examinations and comply with applicable DOT and agency requirements.
Experience:
- Four (4) years of experience in automotive, heavy-duty, fleet, or commercial vehicle maintenance.
- Two (2) years of transit bus maintenance experience preferred or required, depending on agency classification.
- Demonstrated experience diagnosing and repairing complex vehicle systems.
