JOB TITLE: Behavior Intervention Specialist

REPORTS TO: Assistant Superintendent for Special Services

FLSA: Exempt

POSITION PURPOSE/SUMMARY

The Behavior Intervention Specialist supports students and staff by implementing evidence-based behavioral interventions to increase student success in the general education environment. This position works collaboratively with teachers, counselors, Mental Health Professionals (MHPs), administrators, and other support staff to strengthen Tier 1 classroom practices, develop targeted behavioral supports, and build staff capacity to effectively address student behavioral needs. The Behavior Intervention Specialist plays a key role within the district’s Multi‑Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) framework by assisting with the identification, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of behavioral interventions. The position emphasizes proactive support, data‑informed decision‑making, and the development of sustainable systems that improve student outcomes and strengthen classroom environments.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

The Behavior Intervention Specialist shall hold a valid Missouri educator certificate (teacher, counselor, psychological examiner, etc.) and have a proven record of effectiveness in supporting student learning, leadership, and/or social‑emotional development.

Attend relevant professional learning related to MTSS, behavior intervention, restorative and trauma‑informed practices, de‑escalation strategies, data analysis, Panorama, and other evidence‑based behavioral support frameworks as identified by the district.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Collaborate with classroom teachers, counselors, Mental Health Professionals (MHPs), administrators, and other support staff to identify students requiring behavioral interventions.
• Assist in the development, implementation, and monitoring of behavior intervention plans through the district’s MTSS and problem‑solving processes.
• Provide coaching, feedback, and resources to teachers to strengthen classroom management and increase their capacity to support diverse behavioral needs.
• Utilize Panorama to document interventions, progress‑monitoring data, implementation fidelity, and student outcomes.
• Provide direct support to students in implementing behavioral interventions designed to increase success in the classroom.
• Support students in developing self‑regulation, executive functioning, social‑emotional, and replacement behavior skills.
• Collect, analyze, and interpret behavioral data to assess the effectiveness of interventions and recommend adjustments as needed.
• Conduct classroom observations and assist teams in identifying environmental and instructional factors impacting student behavior and engagement.
• Support teachers in implementing effective Tier 1 classroom management practices and positive behavior supports.
• Model evidence‑based behavior intervention and de‑escalation strategies within classroom settings.
• Participate as an active member of building MTSS, problem‑solving, and student support teams.
• Assist in the development and implementation of schoolwide behavior support systems aligned to district expectations.
• Collaborate with building teams to evaluate behavioral trends and identify proactive supports for students and classrooms.
• Communicate regularly with staff and families regarding student progress and intervention outcomes as appropriate.
• Maintain accurate records and documentation in accordance with district procedures.
• Participate in district initiatives, professional learning, and meetings related to behavior support, MTSS, and student success.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

MENTAL DEMANDS

Ability to maintain highly confidential information, communicate clearly both orally and in writing, and possess the ability to reason and make appropriate decisions. Solve a variety of problems in many different situations and have strong attention to detail.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this position an employee is regularly required to sit, talk, present, and hear. The employee is often required to stand, reach, bend, and lift up to 20 pounds. Close vision ability to look at a computer screen for long periods of time is required. The employee should have excellent talking/speech abilities.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

The Behavior Intervention Specialist will be appointed for a period not to exceed one year and will be directly responsible to the Superintendent or his/her designee. Work hours will be consistent with the District office. The Behavior Intervention Specialist will be employed on a twelve‑month basis.

EVALUATION

Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with the provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of professional personnel.
