Job Summary

Performs protective, law enforcement and security services to ensure the safety and security of patients, visitors, teammates, and property. Investigates criminal acts on hospital grounds, makes arrests, protects life and property, patrols hospital buildings and grounds, and prevents theft and vandalism. Acts as first responder to any imminent threat to life or safety.

Essential Functions
  • Intervenes effectively when encountering unruly, abusive, or threatening individuals, including armed persons.
  • Apprehends and arrests individuals suspected of criminal activity.
  • Conducts investigations within assigned jurisdiction, makes arrests, and processes criminal defendants according to NC criminal procedures.
  • Responds to routine and emergency assistance calls, completes incident reports and documentation.
  • Assists teammates and serves as subject matter expert in criminal processes.
  • Communicates calmly, factually, and courteously, coordinating with community police agencies as needed.
  • Provides armed response to imminent threats to life or safety on Atrium Health property.
  • Prepares criminal cases for court, testifies in proceedings, and attends court as required.
Physical Requirements
  • Clear hearing and communication abilities.
  • Ability to run and exert intense physical effort for restraint and control of subjects.
  • Good visual acuity at close and intermediate ranges.
  • Standing or walking for most of the shift, with bending, stooping, kneeling, and reaching.
  • Exposure to weather and hazardous conditions, including potentially violent subjects.
Education, Experience, and Certifications
  • General Law Enforcement Certification issued by NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards (or ability to transfer laterally).
  • Basic Law Enforcement Training, with a focus on Criminal Justice.
  • Preferred 2 years of law enforcement or public safety experience.
  • Ability to work independently and respond calmly in stressful situations.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local criminal statutes and case law.
  • Proficiency with firearms meeting Atrium Health and North Carolina standards.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain NC General Law Enforcement Certification.
  • Valid driver’s license, pass background checks, polygraph, psychological testing, and mandated training in Taser, CPI, and self-defense.
