Job summary

Wayne County Public Schools is seeking an EC Bus Monitor to assist the driver in safely transporting students with special needs. You will help with loading, securing wheelchairs, monitoring behavior, and following care plans and emergency procedures.

You will attend safety meetings, maintain certifications such as CPR/First Aid, and communicate with teachers, nurses, and parents to support student well‑being on bus routes.

Qualifications

  • Walk, lift, reach, stoop, stand, grasp, balance, climb, kneel, and crouch to secure wheelchairs and safety systems.
  • Have adequate grip/arm strength to tighten each wheelchair tie down.
  • Be able to properly install child safety systems.
  • Identify basic proper wheelchair positioning.
  • Work in various inside and outside environments being subject to weather changes, noise, vibrations, job hazards, and atmospheric conditions.
  • Use visual acuity required for depth perception and color perception.
  • Visually inspect small defects and/or small parts.
  • Use a variety of measuring devices.
  • Assemble or fabricate parts at or within arm's length (5 point tie-down systems for example)
  • Operate machines, motor vehicles, hand tools, and job specific equipment and tools to determine the accuracy and thoroughness of work.
  • Observe general surroundings and activities.
  • Hear sufficiently to accurately perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
  • Use communication by means of spoken word to express or exchange ideas.
  • Safely work in situations of exposure to blood borne pathogens which may require specialized personal protective equipment.
  • Safely operate a wheelchair lift.
  • Communicate with instructional assistants, teachers, principals, and parents concerning student background, medical problems and/or behavior as appropriate.
  • Maintain current knowledge of Emergency Evacuation procedures, bus safety, safety seating systems and securing student equipment.
  • Maintain regular attendance.
  • Must be able to lift objects up to 50 lbs.
  • Help the driver keep the bus clean.
  • Exercise independent judgment and initiative in applying standards to a variety of work situations.
  • Exercise tact and courtesy in contact with parents/guardians, students and school personnel.
  • Maintain Crisis De-escalation/Prevention Certification on an annual basis
  • Maintain CPR Certification
  • Maintain First Aid Certification.

Responsibilities

  • Assists the bus driver with the safety, movement, management, and care of assigned children boarding the school bus, leaving the bus, or being transported.
  • Operates special equipment and attends annual staff development for safety systems.
  • When wheelchair lift is used, operates the lift for loading/unloading and secures wheelchairs.
  • Secure and release students in child safety systems.
  • Attends bus safety and medical staff development meetings.
  • Supervises and monitors student behavior, health, and safety during bus rides.
  • Uses data systems for recording student behavior/progress as appropriate.
  • Administers basic first aid as needed per emergency plans.
  • Follows healthcare and release protocols for students with medical needs.
  • Is familiar with pick-up and release protocols for students.
