Job summary

Wayne County Public Schools is seeking an Exceptional Children Bus Monitor to support safe transportation for students with disabilities. This temporary role collaborates with the bus driver and school staff to protect students’ physical safety and comply with IEPs and transportation plans.

The role emphasizes calm, respectful interaction and the ability to respond to emergencies while maintaining confidentiality and professionalism throughout routes and loading/unloading times.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
• Strong communication and teamwork skills.
• Ability to remain calm and professional in challenging situations.
• Experience or training with students with disabilities is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assist students with boarding and exiting the bus safely.
• Supervise students to ensure safety during transport.
• Support students with physical, medical, emotional, or behavioral needs.
• Follow IEPs, behavior plans, medical alerts, and transportation accommodations.
• Use positive behavior supports and de-escalation strategies when needed.
• Communicate concerns or incidents to bus driver and administration promptly.
• Maintain confidentiality of student information at all times.
• Assist in emergency procedures and evacuations as trained.
• Ensure a calm, respectful bus environment.
• Report safety hazards or equipment issues immediately.
