Job summary

Gilroy Unified School District is looking for a Special Needs Paraeducator to support teachers in meeting classroom objectives. You will work with individual students or small groups to reinforce skills and help them reach the class level.

Responsibilities include implementing instructional strategies, supervising during drills and field trips, assisting with materials, and maintaining records under teacher guidance. A positive, confidential approach to student information is essential.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of English usage, vocabulary, grammar and spelling
• Ability to perform moderately difficult clerical work
• Give oral and written direction
• Ability to speak, read, and write in English
• Ability to compute basic math calculations
• Have 48 college units or an AA degree or higher

Responsibilities

• Administers, scores and records such achievement and diagnostic tests as the teacher recommends forindividual students
• Works with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning of material or skills initiallyintroduced by the teacher
• Assists the teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on a sympatheticunderstanding of individual students, their needs, interests and abilities
• Operates and cares for equipment used in the classroom for instructional purposes
• Helps students master equipment or instructional materials assigned by teacher
• Distributes and collects workbooks, papers and other materials for instruction
• Guides independent study, enrichment work and remedial work set up and assigned by the teacher
• Assists with the supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods and field trips
• Assists with such large group activities as drill work, reading aloud and story telling
• Reads to students, listens to students read, and participates in other forms of oral communications withstudents
• Assists students in the library or media center
• Checks notebooks, corrects papers, and supervises testing and make-up work, as assigned by teacher
• Checks and records student attendance
• Collects and records collection of money
• Helps students with their clothing
• Assists with lunch, snack and clear-up routines
• Assists with clean up and toilet routines
• Alerts the regular teacher to any problem or special information about an individual student
• Serves as chief source of information and help to any substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the regularteacher
• Maintains the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students as isexpected of fully licensed teachers
• Participates in in-service training program, as assigned
• Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties.
