Job summary

The YMCA of South Florida seeks a Special Needs Counselor to oversee daily group programming and supervise children in a licensed child care/day camp setting. You will implement activities, track progress, and ensure safety and nutrition standards are met.

Responsibilities include documenting incidents, performing health checks, and maintaining professional conduct with families and staff. The role requires compliance with licensing rules and YMCA policies.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• Two years’ experience including one year direct contact with children with special needs.
• Ability to relate to children.
• Must be at least eighteen (18) years old at time of hire.
• Clear oral and written communication skills.
• Demonstrated competency in planning and implementing recreational and educational activities.

Responsibilities

• Supervise and implement activities for a group of children as per age/developmental needs.
• Track children’s progress using measurable tools.
• Distribute nutritious snacks daily following health/sanitation practices.
• Coordinate with facility personnel for safety and child wellbeing.
• Document behavior issues and incidents daily as needed.
• Conduct daily health checks and report concerns to Site Supervisor.
• Maintain professional courtesy with parents, staff and clients.
• Follow emergency procedures per YMCA South Florida requirements.
• Report supply needs and ensure proper stock levels with Site Supervisor.
• Inspect program areas for cleanliness and safety; report issues.
• Check bathrooms for supplies and cleanliness before participants enter.
• Complete and submit required administrative forms as directed.
• Attend staff meetings and training opportunities.
• Report incidents to corporate office within 24 hours.
• Adhere to child abuse/neglect reporting requirements; follow internal procedures.
• Maintain proper staff-to-child ratios and report discrepancies.
• Assist Site Supervisor in additional duties as directed.
