Job summary

Great Hearts Academies seeks a Special Education Teaching Assistant (Upper School) at Western Hills campus to support students in both general education and special education resource classrooms. The role collaborates with certified teachers to adapt materials, reinforce rules, and help students succeed in small groups or 1:1 settings.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or higher required.
  • Associate degree or higher preferred.
  • AA 60 college credit hours or ParaPro certification preferred.
  • Experience in special education required.

Responsibilities

  • Support students in small groups or 1:1.
  • Assist students with assignments, homework, projects.
  • Adapt materials and provide modifications to aid learning.
  • Reinforce classroom rules and behavior management strategies.
  • Support development of social skills and positive behaviors.
  • Assist with transitions and activities as needed.
  • Provide personal hygiene, mobility, or assistive device support.
  • Provide general clerical support for the ESS Team.

Position Title: Special Education Teaching Assistant (Upper School)Location: Great Hearts Western Hills Upper School (8702 Ingram RoadSan Antonio, TX 78245)Reports To: HeadmasterFLSA Status: Hourly, Non-ExemptThe Special Student Services - Teaching Assistant is a non-certified assistant to the Special Education Program at the academy for both general education and special education resource classrooms. The assistant will work to support students in all settings n campus under the direction of and in collaboration with the certified Special Education teachers and General Education teachers. Some locations (e.g. Title I schools) may require assistant teachers to have an AA, 60 hours of college credit, or be able to pass a ParaPro proficiency exam before beginning work.Required/Preferred Experience: Has experience in special education.Required/Preferred Skills: Excellent oral and written communication skills, and an interest in reading great books. Educational Aide certification I, II, or III preferred.Physical Functions: Requires but is not limited to standing, sitting, repetitious hand and body movements, bending, squatting, and reaching. May be required to move or position equipment up to 15 pounds approximately.US Work Authorization required.Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a criminal history background check and fingerprint clearance in accordance with state requirements.Travel required: May need to travel locally for training and professional development opportunities.This description reflects management’s assignment of essential functions.
