Job Title: Special Education Assistant

Position Summary:

Telra Institute is seeking a compassionate, dedicated, and patient Special Education Assistant to provide support to students with diverse learning needs. The ideal candidate will work closely with special education teachers and staff to create a supportive, inclusive environment that fosters student success both academically and socially. This role focuses on providing individualized assistance to students with disabilities, ensuring they have the tools and resources necessary to thrive.

Key Responsibilities:

• One-on-One Support: Offer personalized assistance to students with disabilities, helping with classroom tasks, academic work, and daily activities to support their success.

• Behavior Management: Assist in managing student behavior by implementing individualized behavior plans, providing positive reinforcement, and guiding students towards appropriate behaviors.

• Academic Support: Provide help with subjects such as reading, writing, math, and more, using accommodations and modifications as outlined in the student's Individualized Education Plan (IEP).

• Social and Emotional Support: Facilitate the development of social skills, support peer interactions, and provide emotional support to help students navigate social situations.

• Collaboration: Work closely with special education teachers, therapists, and staff to monitor student progress and ensure that each student’s needs are met.

• Record Keeping: Assist with documenting student progress, behavior, and daily activities in accordance with IEPs and other educational plans.

• Additional Duties: Perform other tasks as needed to support student success in the classroom and school environment.

Additional Responsibilities:

1. Accommodations: Implement classroom accommodations based on IEPs and 504 Plans to ensure equitable access to learning. Collaborate with staff to monitor and adjust accommodations as needed.

2. Paperwork Management: Support the EC Coordinator by organizing and managing paperwork related to IEPs and 504 Plans, ensuring compliance and accuracy. Assist in meeting coordination and timely submission of required reports and forms.

3. Substitute for EC Teachers: Provide coverage for EC teachers during meetings or while they complete necessary paperwork, ensuring the continuity of support for students. Manage classroom activities and provide accommodations as needed.

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent required; coursework in special education or a related field is preferred.

• Previous experience working with children, especially those with disabilities, is preferred.

• Demonstrates patience, empathy, and a positive attitude when working with diverse students.

• Ability to adapt to the individual needs of students and respond appropriately to challenges.

• Familiarity with behavioral management strategies and special education laws and policies.

• Strong organizational skills and the ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.

• CPR and First Aid certification preferred, or willingness to obtain.

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to lift, carry, and assist students as needed.

• Ability to sit, stand, and kneel for extended periods.

• The role is primarily classroom-based, with occasional opportunities for outdoor activities and student field trips.
