Job Summary

MDOC is proud to be a Michigan Veteran’s Affairs Agency (MVAA) Gold Level Veteran Friendly Employer, employing nearly 1,500 veterans and active‑serving military members across the department.

The Department of Corrections (MDOC) is seeking a Special Education Teacher to coordinate the delivery of special education services for eligible students. The role includes developing schedules, generating reports, and teaching ABE/GED students reading, math, and writing skills. Work will take place inside the secure perimeter of a multi‑level institution and may involve interaction with prisoners of all custody levels and duties at multiple facilities.

Key Responsibilities

• Coordinate the delivery of special education services, resources, schedules, and reports for eligible students.
• Teach ABE/GED students reading, math, and writing skills.
• Interact daily with inmates across all custody levels.
• Perform duties at multiple facilities as required.

Required Education and Experience

Education: Bachelor’s degree in special education or a K‑12 field.

Experience: No specific type or amount is required.

Additional Requirements

• Current Michigan teaching certificate and special education endorsement (autism, cognitive impairment, emotional impairment, learning disabilities, physical education for students with disabilities, physical or other health impairment, speech and language impairment, visual impairment).
• Applicants with a felony conviction may be screened out in accordance with Public Act 191 of 2017. Misdemeanor and felony applicants are ineligible until satisfactory completion of their sentence.
• Applicants must meet state ethical standards and report any conflict of interest as required.
