Job summary

YAI is seeking a dedicated Special Education Teacher to oversee a classroom of school-aged children with brain-based disabilities and other I/DD.

You will prepare lessons, provide instructional and behavioral support, and collaborate with school therapy teams to implement recommendations. The role includes documenting goals, participating in IEP meetings, and regularly communicating with parents.

Qualifications

• Current NYS certification as a Teacher of Students with Disabilities or Permanent Special Education Certification.
• Bachelor’s degree in education or closely related field and active pursuit of a master’s level program in NYS; expected certification within 5 years.
• Two years of experience in childcare, social services, healthcare or school-based role.
• Exceptional interpersonal, problem solving and communication skills.
• Ability to take initiative, multi-task & meet deadlines; highly flexible.

Responsibilities

• Oversees a classroom of school-aged children with brain-based disabilities and/or other I/DD.
• Prepares lessons and provides instructional and behavioral management support to students individually and in small groups.
• Incorporates social skills into daily lesson plans and activities.
• Collaborates with each student’s school therapy team and implements therapy recommendations.
• Documents annual academic goals and compiles quarterly progress reports; participates in IEP processes and meetings.
• Communicates with and involves parents regularly in their child’s activities and progress.
• Provides direction and supervision to paraprofessionals and teacher assistants in the classroom.
• Designs multisensory lessons using art, music, and technology to boost literacy, numeracy, communication, social, and life skills.
