Position Summary

In consultation with other school personnel, the Special Education Teacher provides educational services to students with disabilities. He/she is responsible for planning, developing, delivering, and evaluating appropriate individualized educational services, learning programs, and instruction in the inclusion, resource, LID, and other instructional settings.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Planning and providing specially designed instructions to students receiving special education and related services.
  • Collaborating with related service providers and general education staff in the implementation of accommodations and modifications.
  • Ongoing communication and collaboration with parents, staff, and administrative staff regarding student planning and progress.
Special Knowledge/Skills
  • Knowledge of core academic subject assigned.
  • Knowledge of curriculum and instruction.
  • Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations and policies affecting special education.
  • Knowledge of current special education practices and methodologies.
  • Knowledge of educational technology applications.
Required/Preferred Education
  • Teachers: Bachelor's degree required.
  • Coordinators: Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred.
Required/Preferred Experience
  • Teachers: 1-2 years teaching experience preferred.
Required Certifications
  • Valid Texas Special Education Teaching Certification/Appropriate Board Licensure.
  • Valid Texas Generalist/Core content Teaching Certification with required endorsements or training for relevant subject and level.
Physical Functions
  • Requires but is not limited to standing, sitting, repetitious hand and body movements, bending, squatting, and reaching.
  • May be required to move or position equipment up to 15 pounds approximately.
Travel Required
  • May need to travel locally for training and professional development opportunities.
