Job summary

Shelby County Schools in Memphis seeks an instructor for the Fall Break Learning Academy. This role focuses on delivering academic, social, physical, and skill development to students in designated grades to prepare them for success as 21st-century citizens and workers.

You will plan lessons, assess progress, communicate with parents, sponsor activities, and maintain records in compliance with state requirements. This is a dedicated fall program position.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Education with endorsement and valid Tennessee certificate.
• Commitment for the entire fall school period and attendance at all planning sessions and admin meetings.
• Availability for fall school setup and closeout operations.

Responsibilities

• Create a fall school environment conducive to learning and prepare instructional materials.
• Establish classroom behavior standards and maintain management inside and outside the school.
• Assess student progress on a timetable and provide written/oral reports; administer tests.
• Plan curriculum and prepare lessons to meet individual student needs.
• Confers with parents and staff to develop educational programs.
• Create learning materials tailored to students’ abilities and interests.
• Instruct students using strategies to develop language, cognition, social, and emotional skills.
• Motivate students and provide ongoing assessment and feedback.
• Maintain accurate records as required by law and district policies.
• Assist administration with policies and supervise student activities.
• Sponsor activities and tutor students as requested.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Job description

Purpose and Scope

This position is responsible for professional instructions during fall school designed to provide academic, social, physical, and skills development for students in specific grades/subject areas to prepare them to be successful citizens and workers in the 21st century.

Essential Job Functions

• Creates a fall school educational environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and needs of the students; prepares instructional materials for classes assigned and provides written evidence of preparation to Site Administrator – Fall School upon request.
• Establishes a standard of classroom behavior; maintains classroom management inside and outside of the school.
• Assess the accomplishments of students on an established timetable, and provides written and oral progress reports to parents/guardians, Site Administrator – Fall School and selected staff. Administers tests and assessments.
• Plans fall school curriculum and prepares lessons and other instructional materials to meet individual needs of students within state and fall school requirements based on the educational, physical, and emotional levels of student development.
• Confers with parents and appropriate resource staff to develop educational programs for students.
• Creates learning materials geared to students’ abilities and interests.
• Instructs students by using educational strategies and techniques to improve sensory, motor and perceptual-motor development, perception, memory, language, communication skills, cognition, social, and emotional development.
• Motivates students and provides consistent reinforcement of learning skills, and provides continuous assessment and feedback to students for all learning activities.
• Maintains accurate and complete records as required by law, district and fall school regulations.
• Assists administration in implementing all policies and rules governing fall school student activities and conduct.
• Sponsors student activities/clubs/teams/organization and tutors students as requested.
• Performs other related duties as assigned or directed.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and an endorsement in the grade/subject taught with a valid Tennessee certificate. Governed by the Rules and Regulations of the Tennessee Code Annotated and the collective bargaining agreement.

The following special conditions are required: Commitment for the entire period of fall school. May involve missing some district training opportunities. Attendance at ALL preparatory planning sessions and periodic administrative meetings. Availability prior to the end of the regular school assignment contract to participate in fall school setup and preparation. Availability for fall school closeout operations which may occur after the new academic year contract has started.
