Job summary

State-of-Michigan seeks a Special Education teacher to coordinate services, resources, schedules and reports for eligible students within Bellamy Creek Correctional Facility. The role also teaches reading, math and writing to ABE/GED students in a secure facility.

The ideal candidate holds a bachelor's in special education and a Michigan teaching certificate with a SPED endorsement. Experience with autism, cognitive or other impairments is a plus; duty station is inside a correctional

• A current Michigan teaching certificate with a special education endorsement is required.
• Endorsements in autism, cognitive impairment, emotional impairment, learning disabilities, physical education for students with disabilities, physical or health impairment, speech and language impairment, or visual impairment are preferred.

Job description

This Special Education position coordinates the delivery of special education services, resources, schedules and reports for special education eligible students, as well as teaches ABE/GED students reading, math and writing skills. Work location is inside the secure perimeter of a multi-level institution and includes daily and re-occurring interaction with prisoners of all custody levels. The position is assigned to the Bellamy Creek Correctional Facility. Additional duties as assigned by supervisor and Education Manager.

Education

Additional Requirements

Possession of current Michigan teaching certificate (or equivalent) with a special education endorsement in autism, cognitive impairment, emotional impairment, learning disabilities, physical education for students with disabilities, physical or other health impairment, speech and language impairment, and/or visual impairment.

New hires to the MDOC along with previous MDOC employees that are returning after being away from the department for more than two years will complete Non-Custody New Employee Training (NCNET) either 40 hours or 80 hours of initial in-person training based on their level of offender contact and job classification. All new employees will complete additional online training to successfully complete their non-custody new employee training.
