Job Summary

The Extended School Year Special Education Teacher develops and provides specialized instruction to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities; evaluates and assesses student progress against instructional objectives; follows IDEA State mandated due process procedures and functions as Case Manager to assigned IEP students.

Terms of Employment

This is a part-time, hourly position for four weeks, from June 2nd to June 26th, with an additional four days of planning and professional development to be determined.

• Hours: 7:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday

• Compensation: $35 per hour

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Provide individualized, research-based instruction aligned with each student’s IEP goals and the Illinois Learning Standards, ensuring all instruction is designed for a four-hour instructional day, four days a week, totaling 16 instructional days.
2. Design and implement daily lessons incorporating Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading (WICOR) to create engaging and rigorous learning experiences, integrating multiple learning tasks, including whole-class verbal participation.
3. Clearly communicate learning goals, tailor instructional strategies, and ensure students actively engage with materials and resources to enhance comprehension, retention, and achievement of IEP objectives.
4. Foster a supportive, student-centered learning environment that promotes academic growth, social-emotional well-being, and personal empowerment while managing student behavior to maintain a safe and optimal learning space.
5. Support students in taking an active role in their learning by setting and monitoring individualized goals, engaging in reflection, and participating in interventions and progress monitoring aligned with the MTSS framework.
6. Collaborate with general education teachers, special education teachers, bilingual educators, and related services personnel to adapt and modify curricula while incorporating cultural diversity and appreciation.
7. Utilize technology appropriately to enhance the teaching and learning process and provide students with opportunities to collaborate with peers, engage in movement-based learning, and experience diverse instructional strategies.
8. Develop and implement individualized IEP plans, including present levels of performance, accommodations, instructional goals, and required services, while overseeing the delivery of special education services.
9. Serve as the primary contact for parents, participating in evaluations and reevaluations while maintaining ongoing communication regarding student progress.
10. Participate in a professional learning community, collaborating with instructional staff, school personnel, parents, and community resources to improve student outcomes and support the school improvement plan.
11. Assess student progress regularly, adjust instructional techniques as needed, and provide direction, supervision, and feedback to educational assistants.
12. Perform other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands

The physical demands of a Special Education Extended School Year Teacher include the ability to remain active and engaged in various classroom and therapy settings for extended periods of time. Teachers must be able to stand, sit, and move throughout the classroom and school environment to provide individualized instruction and support to students. The position requires the ability to assist students with physical disabilities, which may involve lifting, positioning, or transferring students, often using assistive devices and occasionally lifting up to 50 pounds. Teachers must be able to bend, kneel, crouch, and reach to assist students in activities, provide necessary interventions, and set up learning environments. Clear verbal communication is essential, requiring strong vocal projection to give instructions, model activities, and provide support during classroom or therapy sessions. Additionally, teachers must have the ability to manage classroom materials, including moving and organizing adaptive equipment, technology, and resources used for instruction. Teachers should also be prepared to respond quickly to students' needs, whether academic, behavioral, or emotional, while maintaining a safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environment. The role requires flexibility to adapt to various physical environments such as classrooms, playgrounds, and therapy rooms.
