About EUPISD

The Eastern Upper Peninsula Intermediate School District (EUPISD) is one of 56 intermediate school districts (ISD) in Michigan. Every one of the state's 500+ local school districts is part of an ISD.

The EUPISD is a regional education service agency with the primary function to provide or assist our local districts to provide special programs and services. Within our ISD, there are 19 districts covering 4,000 square miles in three counties and part of another in the eastern end of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The total number of PK-12 students is 6,500.

The EUPISD is funded with a combination of local, state, and federal funds. The voters of EUPISD have approved a 1.75 mill levy for special education, a .2 mill levy for general operations, and a 1.0 mill levy for vocational education. State aid received is based on annual authorizations from the state legislature. Our current budget is $35 million. The EUPISD currently has 210 employees/contractors providing services to our local districts and students.

The EUPISD serves local districts by providing educational services and support in special education, curriculum, early childhood, career and technical education, professional development, business services and technology. The EUPISD also pursues business, community, and interagency collaboration. The EUPISD has a long history of collaboration with our local districts that has resulted in the creation of a strong infrastructure in support of all aspects of teaching, learning, compliance, and fiscal management.

Purpose of Position:

To provide instructional support and direction to students within the scope of the duties of a long‑term substitute teacher and/or instructional aide while completing coursework and certification requirements to become a fully certified teacher.

Period of Employment:

Up to 190 days per year.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Passion for providing high quality instructional services to students within the EUP.
• Interest in enrollment/completion of a teaching special education teaching credential.
• Commitment to staying in the EUP Region and maintaining employment with the EUPISD or a school district within Chippewa, Luce, or Mackinac Counties for 5 years post completion of teaching credential.
• Current employees of the EUPISD preferred.
• Preference given to applicants with demonstrated success in working with individuals with disabilities.
• Bachelor's degree or 60 credits.
• Proficient in the use of technology.
• Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative manner with parents and professionals.
• Strong organizational and time management skills, written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills, diligent work habits, and the ability to apply common sense to routine decision‑making.
• Ability to maintain self‑control and complete tasks with frequent interruptions.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast‑paced environment.
• Must have regular and reliable attendance.
• Ability to carry and move heavy objects and lift 40 lbs.
• Possess a valid driver's license.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Participate in all student instructional/support services assigned as directed in order to develop capacity as a future special education teacher.
• May serve as a substitute teacher and provide direct instruction to students assigned.
• May serve as a substitute support staff member and provide instructional support, behavioral support, and direct care services.
• Will participate with all mentoring activities assigned by Special Education Supervisor and/or Teacher mentor.
• Completion of all assigned documentation in a timely manner.
• Coordinate and participate in team meetings as directed by the Special Education Supervisor, Building Principal or designee.
• Provide support and coordination of all behavior/safety support plans.
• Be continuously enrolled and in good standing in a program leading to teacher certification.
• Provide evidence of an approved plan of study from a university or alternate route to certification provider.
• Completion of not less than 12 credits (or equivalent) toward special education teacher certification annually.
• As needed for completion of duties, attend meetings outside of normal working hours.
• Remain free of substance abuse and/or illegal drug use at all times.
• Other duties as assigned by the Director of Special Education or designee.

Wages and Fringes:

Non‑union, Equivalent to BA Step 1 of professional contract with benefits. Tuition and fees fully paid by EUPISD after all scholarships and grants received are applied.
