Job summary

Devereux Arizona’s Residential Treatment Center in Scottsdale seeks an in-person Special Education Teacher to deliver instruction to youth aged 7–17 with emotional and behavioral needs. You will develop lesson plans, implement curriculum aligned with state standards, and work closely with staff to support literacy and academic progress.

The role offers a structured schedule, a 7:30am–3:30pm workday, and a supportive team environment in a dedicated RTC setting.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field is required.
  • Arizona Special Education Certification is required in Arizona.
  • One year teaching experience in Special Education is preferred.
  • Understanding of learning theories relevant to working with multiple handicapped individuals.

  • Provide direct in-classroom instruction (not virtual).
  • Develop lesson plans and deliver curriculum aligned with state standards.
  • Assess student performance and provide progress reports.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to plan and deliver literacy instruction.

Devereux Arizona’s Residential Treatment Center (RTC)

provides intensive, 24-hour support for youth aged 7 to 17, who are experiencing serious emotional, behavioral, and mental health challenges. In a structured, therapeutic environment, we combine clinical expertise with compassionate, trauma-informed care to help youth heal, grow and build a brighter future. The RTC features dormitories, an accredited K-12 school, food services, 24/7 on-site nursing, and specialized therapy and clinical services.

Special Education Teacher Job Duties Include
  • Working with students on social/communication skills, coping mechanisms, verbal/physical aggression, and emotional/behavioral challenges that impact overall functioning.
  • Developing lesson plans and proficiently delivering curriculum using available digital teaching methods and educational models that are aligned with state standards
  • Assessing student performance objectives on a regular basis and providing progress reports as required
  • Aligning classroom content within the Arizona State Standards and Common Core Standards, as well as collaborating with teaching colleagues to plan, facilitate, and teach highly effective literacy instruction
Classroom Structure
  • Low student-teacher ratios! Classroom sizes range from 8-12 students with a 6:1 student-to-staff ratio, including 1-2 direct care professional staff members in the classroom for additional support
  • Teachers have immediate access to school support staff, teaching materials and supplies, and a state of the art database with tracking capabilities to help with data accumulation
  • Year-round school (*approx 225 instructional/grading/in-service days, 35 preset holiday break days, 19 additional float days, and accumulated sick time) *Number of days are subject to change with school year
  • Provide direct in-classroom instruction (we are not teaching virtually/online)

  • Salary: $60,000 - $66,000
  • Schedule: Monday-Friday 7:30am-3:30pm

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field
  • Arizona Special Education Certification required
  • One (1) year experience teaching in a Special Education classroom preferred
  • Understanding of learning theories related to working with multiple handicapped individuals

  • Ability to attend full time new hire orientation Mon-Fri 8:30am-5pm (paid)
  • Must be 21 years of age or older (per licensing standards)
  • Drug test within 24hrs of offer w/ negative results
  • Pre-employment Physical and Job Demand Assessment
  • Valid Arizona Driver's License & pass DMV 36-month history check
  • Current Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card with no restrictions (or eligibility to obtain with no restrictions). Arizona Revised Statutes Notice: If a person's employment record contains a six-month or longer time frame during which the person was not employed by any employer, a completed application with a new set of fingerprints shall be submitted to the department of public safety.
