Job description

POSITION: SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER - DEMONSTRATION TEACHER LOCATION: A. HARRY MOORE SALARY: $63,833.23 - $101,853.04

Reports To: Building Principal and/or Supervisor of Pupil Services

Supervises: Students with disabilities in classroom and instructional settings; may supervise teacher’s assistants and paraprofessionals as assigned

Job Goal

To provide high-quality, individualized instruction that supports the academic, behavioral, and social-emotional development of students with disabilities, ensuring meaningful access to the general education curriculum and progress toward IEP goals.

Performance Responsibilities
A. Instructional Leadership
  1. Plans, designs, and delivers individualized and small-group instruction based on IEP goals, state standards, and student needs.
  2. Implements evidence-based teaching strategies, including explicit instruction, task analysis, visual supports, and multimodal learning approaches.
  3. Adapts curriculum, materials, and assessments to meet diverse learning needs while maintaining high expectations for all students.
  4. Integrates assistive technology and communication devices to support student independence and engagement.
B. IEP Development and Implementation
  1. Leads or actively participates in IEP meetings, contributing data, progress reports, and recommendations for goals and services.
  2. Writes clear, measurable, and standards-aligned IEP goals and objectives.
  3. Monitors and documents student progress toward IEP goals and adjusts instruction accordingly.
  4. Ensures IEP mandates (related services, accommodations, placement) are implemented with fidelity.
C. Behavioral and Social-Emotional Support
  1. Collaborates with BCBAs, counselors, and support staff to implement behavior intervention plans (BIPs) and positive behavior supports.
  2. Teaches and reinforces social skills, self-regulation strategies, and executive functioning through direct instruction and embedded learning opportunities.
  3. Uses restorative practices, SEL curricula, and trauma-informed approaches to build a safe, supportive classroom community.
D. Collaboration and Communication
  1. Works closely with general education teachers, related service providers, and paraprofessionals to support inclusive practices and co‑teaching models.
  2. Maintains regular communication with families through progress reports, conferences, and informal updates.
  3. Shares strategies and resources with colleagues to promote effective support for students with disabilities across settings.
E. Assessment and Data Management
  1. Administers formal and informal assessments to monitor academic and functional progress.
  2. Uses data to inform instructional decisions, groupings, and IEP revisions.
  3. Maintains accurate, confidential, and up-to-date student records in compliance with FERPA and district policies.
F. Professional Growth and School Engagement
  1. Participates in professional development to stay current with special education law, research, and pedagogy.
  2. Contributes to school-wide initiatives such as PBIS, MTSS, and inclusive education efforts.
  3. Models respect, empathy, and high expectations for all students, fostering a culture of dignity and belonging.
Qualifications
  1. Holds a valid New Jersey Standard License with endorsement in Teacher of Students with Disabilities (TOSD).
  2. Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or a related field; Master’s degree preferred.
  3. Teaching experience or willingness to teach in special education, preferably in a K–12 inclusive or self‑contained setting.
  4. Demonstrated knowledge of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), IDEA, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), differentiated instruction, assistive technology, and evidence-based practices for students with autism, emotional disturbances, learning disabilities, and developmental delays.
  5. Strong data literacy and experience using student performance data to inform instruction.
  6. Excellent communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
  7. Commitment to trauma-informed practices, cultural responsiveness, and inclusive education.
  8. Hours are 8 am to 3 pm.

The performance of this job will be evaluated annually by the Principal in accordance with New Jersey State Law and the provisions of the policy on the evaluation of certified staff.
