Job summary

River Valley School District is seeking a Special Education Personal Care Aide to support a student with significant needs at River Valley Middle High School. You will provide one-to-one assistance, accompany the student in classrooms, and help with daily routines under the teacher's direction.

The role requires dependable attendance, a flexible schedule, and the ability to work as part of a team. Candidates should have two years of college or an associate degree and be comfortable performing

Qualifications

• Two years of college or an associate degree is required or demonstrated equivalent knowledge.
• Ability to assist in reading, writing, and mathematics as appropriate.
• Willingness to provide personal care and individual support.

Responsibilities

• Effectively participate in meetings and district activities.
• Provide one-to-one support to an assigned student throughout the day.
• Accompany and support the student in classrooms, transitions, lunch, and during activities.
• Assist the student in participating in classroom routines and activities as directed.
• Provide supervision to support student safety and participation all day.
• Support positive behavior using school policies and plans.
• Assist with self-care needs such as toileting, hygiene, feeding, mobility as required.
• Assist teachers with materials, record-keeping and data collection.
• Reinforce teacher-directed skills and participate in special activities as needed.
• Be aware of medical needs and follow established protocols under staff supervision.
• Maintain confidentiality and follow policies on student rights and safety.
• Support transitions between programs, classrooms, and activities.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

A. Completed two (2) years study at an institution of higher education; OR

B. Obtained at least an associate degree; OR

C. Met a rigorous standard of quality and demonstrate through formal State or local academic assessment knowledge and the ability to assist in reading, writing, and mathematics; or reading readiness, writing readiness, and mathematics readiness as appropriate.

• Has a basic understanding of the educational process and the application of knowledge to assist students.
• Has the ability to relate to students, parents, teachers, and members of the community.
• Has the ability to follow directions, implement plans, and complete tasks in a timely manner.
• Has the ability to work as a team member.
• Demonstrates a good work ethic and has high standards for work performance.
• Is dependable and maintains a good attendance record.
• Has a flexible schedule to accommodate the hours needed within the day.
• Is willing and able to provide personal care and individual support to a student with significant needs.
• Reliable, regular, and punctual on-site attendance is required to perform the essential functions, duties, and responsibilities of a Personal Care Aide.

Preferred

• Has experience working in a school setting.
• Has the experience supervising students and being responsible for their safety.
• Has experience working with school-age children.
• Has experience working with students with cognitive impairments or other significant special education needs.
• Has experience providing one-to-one student support or personal care.

Responsibilities

• Effectively participate in meetings, staffing and other required district and building activities as appropriate.
• Provide individual support to an assigned student throughout the school day under the direction of the teacher.
• Accompany and support the student in classrooms, during transitions, lunch, physical education, arrival and dismissal, and other school activities.
• Assist the student in participating in educational activities and classroom routines as directed by the teacher.
• Provide supervision and assistance necessary to support the student's safety and participation throughout the school day.
• Support appropriate student behavior using positive behavior support strategies consistent with Board Policy, established plans, and staff direction.
• Assist the student in meeting self-help, health, and personal care needs, including toileting, hygiene, feeding, mobility, and other daily living needs as required.
• Assist teachers in preparing materials, record keeping, and data collection relative to student progress.
• Reinforce teacher-directed skills and activities with the student as appropriate.
• Participate in special instructional activities to meet program and student needs, including loading/unloading buses, physical education, lunch, assemblies, field trips, and other school activities.
• Understand and be aware of medical needs of the student and follow established medical protocols under the supervision of appropriate school personnel.
• Maintain confidentiality.
• Follow established policies and procedures regarding student medical concerns, safety, student rights, emergency/disaster plans, and other applicable requirements.
• Assist the student in transitioning between programs, classrooms, and school activities.
