Job summary

A CTECS Special Education Instructor is responsible for educating students with and without disabilities by using differentiated instructional strategies, accommodations, and assistive technology within academic and trade coursework at Howell Cheney Technical High School in Manchester, CT.

The role emphasizes collaboration with content area teachers, development of transition needs, parent and community outreach, and effective classroom management to foster a student-centered learning

Qualifications

  • Four years of high school (9-12) teaching experience.
  • Trade career referral experience.
  • Experience with assessments to inform instruction and promote learning.
  • Experience with classroom management and behavior intervention plans.

The State of Connecticut, Connecticut Technical Education and Career System (CTECS) is recruiting for an anticipated vacancy as a Special Education Instructor to join our team at Howell Cheney Technical High School, located in Manchester, CT.

To be considered for this position, Special Education Instructors must posses an active State of Connecticut teaching certificate in one of the following areas:

  • 065 Comprehensive Special Education, PK–12 or 165 Comprehensive Special Education, PreK–12 or 265 Comprehensive Special Education, 1–12
  • be Eligible for a State of Connecticut teaching certificate in subject area (includes ARC candidates).

Position Highlights
  • Schedule: first shift, full time (35 hours per week) Monday through Friday.
  • Location: Howell Cheney Technical High School
  • Salary: VS01-VS02, derived from the State Vocational Federation of Teachers.
  • Academic Calendar: CTECS follows a ten-month academic calendar (188 days per year.)
Your Role as a Special Education Instructor at Howell Cheney Tech

A CTECS Special Education Instructor is responsible for the education of students with and without disabilities and the case management of students with disabilities by employing a variety of teaching practices that reflect high learning expectations and current pedagogy of teaching and learning methods, differentiated instructional strategies, and assistive technology in all discipline areas including, but not limited to the following: making accommodations and/or modifications to the curriculum and working collaboratively with content area teachers to ensure equity to all students, fostering a gradual release of responsibility, fostering student discourse, encouraging and supporting self-advocacy, designing and assessing transition needs, engaging in parent and community outreach, consultation, and collaboration, creation of a student centered classroom environment that is conducive to learning, being knowledgeable in administering a variety of assessment batteries, and participation in professional learning.

About Us

For over 100 years, CTECS has been the leading force in Career Technical Education (CTE) in the State of Connecticut. CTECS operates 17 diploma-granting technical high schools, one technical education center and two airframe mechanics and aircraft maintenance programs. The school system provides a direct employment pipeline for high school students and adult learners.

Purpose of Job Class (Nature of Work)

In the Connecticut Technical Education and Career System this class is accountable for educating students in academic and trade coursework.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Four (4) years’ experience in a high school setting (9-12 education).
  • Trade career referral experience.
  • Professional experience related to providing services, accommodation’s, monitoring progress, and case management of students within a high school setting.
  • Experience with varied assessments to inform instruction and promote learning.
  • Experience with fostering and facilitating learning, classroom management, and behavior intervention plans.
  • Experience delivering ideas and objectives through oral and written communication.
  • Experience utilizing computer software such as Microsoft Office and Google Products.
Special Requirements

Incumbents must possess at time of appointment a valid certificate issued by the Connecticut State Board of Education in accordance with the Certification Regulations Concerning State Educator Certificates, Permits and Authorizations, with a secondary school endorsement.
