The State of Connecticut - CT Technical Education and Career System (CTECS) seeks a dedicated Special Education Instructor to educate students with and without disabilities at H.C. Wilcox Technical High School in Meriden and Vinal Technical High School in Middletown.

The role emphasizes inclusive practices, collaboration, and transition planning. Candidates must hold an active CT teaching certificate in Comprehensive Special Education (PK–12 or 1–12) or be eligible in a subject area.

Qualifications

  • Active Connecticut teaching certificate in Comprehensive Special Education PK–12 or 1–12, or eligible for CT teaching certificate in subject area.
  • Four years’ experience in a high school setting (9-12).
  • Experience with accommodations, monitoring progress, and case management.
  • Experience with varied assessments to inform instruction and promote learning.
  • Experience with classroom management and behavior intervention plans.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.

Responsibilities

  • Educate students in academic and trade coursework.
  • Apply differentiated instructional strategies and assistive technology.
  • Collaborate with content-area teachers to ensure equity and transition readiness.
  • Engage in parent and community outreach; design and assess transition needs.

At the State of Connecticut, Connecticut Technical Education and Career System (CTECS) we are recruiting for Special Education Instructors to join our team at the following locations:

  • H.C. Wilcox Technical High School in Meriden, CT�
  • Vinal Technical High School in Middletown, CT�

A CTECS Special Education Instructor is responsible for the education of students with and without disabilities and the case management of students with disabilities by employing a variety of teaching practices that reflect high learning expectations and current pedagogy of teaching and learning methods, differentiated instructional strategies, and assistive technology in all discipline areas including, but not limited to the following: making accommodations and/or modifications to the curriculum and working collaboratively with content area teachers to ensure equity to all students, fostering a gradual release of responsibility, fostering student discourse, encouraging and supporting self-advocacy, designing and assessing transition needs, engaging in parent and community outreach, consultation, and collaboration, creation of a student centered classroom environment that is conducive to learning, being knowledgeable in administering a variety of assessment batteries, and participation in professional learning.

This role is ideal for an educator who is passionate about inclusive practices, skilled in collaboration, and committed to preparing students with diverse learning needs for meaningful participation in both school and the skilled workforce.

To be considered for this position, Special Education Instructors must possess an active State of Connecticut teaching certificate in one of the following areas:

  • 065 Comprehensive Special Education, PK–12�or 165 Comprehensive Special Education, PreK–12�or 265 Comprehensive Special Education, 1–12
  • OR be Eligible for a State of Connecticut teaching certificate in subject area (includes ARC candidates).

Position Highlights

Schedule: first shift, full time (35 hours per week) Monday through Friday.

Salary: VS01-VS02, derived from the State Vocational Federation of Teachers.

Academic Calendar: CTECS follows a ten-month academic calendar (188 days per year.)

Purpose of Job Class (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Connecticut Technical Education and Career System this class is accountable for educating students in academic and trade coursework.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Four (4) years’ experience in a high school setting (9-12 education).
  • Trade career referral experience.
  • Professional experience related to providing services, accommodation’s, monitoring progress, and case management of students within a high school setting.
  • Experience with varied assessments to inform instruction and promote learning.
  • Experience with fostering and facilitating learning, classroom management, and behavior intervention plans.
  • Experience delivering ideas and objectives through oral and written communication.
  • Experience utilizing computer software such as Microsoft Office and Google Products
Special Requirements

Incumbents must possess at time of appointment a valid certificate issued by the Connecticut State Board of Education in accordance with the Certification Regulations Concerning State Educator Certificates, Permits and Authorizations, with a secondary school endorsement.
