Job summary

Quitman County Board of Education is seeking a Student Success Mentor to provide individualized mentoring for identified students, monitor grades and attendance, and engage with administrators and teachers to support student needs and successes.

You will conduct regular student check-ins to promote positive behavior, and help families stay informed through effective communication, advocacy, and collaboration with school staff.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED; associate's or bachelor's in education, counseling, social work, psychology, or related field preferred.
  • Experience with school-age children or adolescents in educational, mentoring, youth development, or community settings.
  • Ability to build positive, supportive, trusting relationships with students.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with students, parents/guardians, teachers, and administrators.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle student information professionally.
  • Dependable, organized, and able to maintain accurate records of student contacts, progress, concerns, and interventions.
  • Ability to monitor student grades, attendance, academic engagement, and behavior and communicate concerns.
  • Collaborate with teachers and administrators to identify needs and celebrate successes.
  • Demonstrates patience, consistency, professionalism, and a positive attitude.
  • Ability to encourage students to set academic, behavioral, attendance, and personal goals and monitor progress.

Responsibilities

  • Meet with students at least twice per week to monitor grades, engagement, and behavior and report to administration and teachers.
  • Provide individualized mentoring, progress monitoring, advocacy, and family engagement.

  • Identify barriers affecting attendance, achievement, behavior, or connectedness and address them with staff.
  • Collaborate with families, teachers, counselors, administrators, and special education staff to address student needs.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation of student contacts, interventions, progress, and outcomes.

Job description

The Student Success Mentor will meet with students at least twice per week, monitor grades, academic engagement, classroom and school behavior and meet with administration and/or teachers regarding the students' needs and successes. The mentor will be responsible for positive encouragement between the student, administrators and home regarding his/her school success.

Student Success Mentor – Job Description
  • Serve as the primary Check & Connect interventionist for identified students.
  • Provide individualized mentoring, progress monitoring, advocacy, and family engagement.
  • Conduct regular student check-ins to build trusting and supportive relationships.
  • Monitor student attendance, behavior, discipline, academic performance, and school engagement.
  • Work with students to establish goals and develop strategies for improving academic and behavioral outcomes.
  • Identify barriers that may interfere with student attendance, achievement, behavior, or school connectedness.
  • Collaborate with families, teachers, counselors, administrators, and special education staff to address student needs.
  • Provide ongoing encouragement, problem-solving support, and accountability for students.
  • Help students strengthen self-advocacy, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
  • Connect students and families with appropriate school and community resources and services.
  • Promote positive relationships and communication between the student, home, and school.
  • Recognize and reinforce student progress, accomplishments, and positive behaviors.
  • Support interventions designed to improve educational outcomes and reduce disciplinary removals from the instructional setting.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation of student contacts, interventions, progress, and outcomes.
Qualifications Required:
  • High school diploma or GED required; associate's or bachelor's degree in education, counseling, social work, psychology, or a related field preferred.
  • Experience working with school-age children or adolescents in an educational, mentoring, youth development, or community setting.
  • Ability to build positive, supportive, and trusting relationships with students.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills when working with students, parents/guardians, teachers, and administrators.
