Title: Special Education Coordinator Reports To: Special Education Coordinator

Department: Special Education Classification: Administrator

Work Year: 12-Month

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Illinois Public Educator License, General Administrative Endorsement, and Teacher Evaluator Designation required
  • Undergrad degree in special education preferred, or a related services field (school psychology, school social work, etc.)
  • Supervisory and/or leadership experience in special education programs including leading Section 504 meetings and/or IEP meetings
  • Supervisory and/or leadership experience managing building level programming, parent concerns, and student discipline
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
  • Supervises and evaluates certified and support staff
  • Enforces the district's personnel policies
  • Participates in the recruitment, screening, hiring, assigning, and training of department personnel
  • Assists with recommendations for tenure and dismissal
  • Assists with coordination of contracted related service personnel
  • Works with departmental staff to resolve student, staff and/or parent problems
  • Engages in relevant curriculum planning and development
  • Provides consultation and leadership regarding health and safety assessments of students
  • Maintains administrative records; prepares reports and correspondence
  • Supervises special education compliance
  • Attends relevant school, district, and professional meetings
  • Participates in activities for continued professional growth
  • Supervises Special Education department events
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Director
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of:
Planning, organization and direction of student programming and activities; District organization, operations, policies and objectives; Oral and written communication skills; Current applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures; Legal proceedings and due process.

Ability to:
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing; Interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures; Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action; Meet schedules and timelines; Work independently; Plan and organize work.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Environment: School sites; indoor and outdoor settings.

Physical Abilities: Standing for extended periods of time; bending at the waist to assist students; reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally; hearing and speaking to exchange information; seeing to monitor student activities and behavior; dexterity of hands and fingers to demonstrate activities and prepare materials.
