Job summary

Virginia Beach City Public Schools seeks a part-time paraprofessional to support classroom teachers and assist students with disabilities in achieving instructional goals.

The role involves assisting with personal care, mobility, and behavior support, under supervision, and requires HS diploma or GED and ability to work with diverse student needs. Employment is temporary and schedule is limited to 29 hours per week, at $16.40/hour.

Qualifications

• General knowledge of teaching practices for special education.
• Ability to maintain files and information.
• Skill in using classroom and instructional equipment (AV, computer, etc.).
• Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with teachers, parents, students, and administrators.

Responsibilities

• Assist classroom teachers with duties to support instructional and behavioral goals.
• Work with individuals or groups as assigned by the teacher.
• Assist with behavior modification as directed by the teacher.
• Lift, move, and operate adaptive equipment.
• Help students with personal care tasks (toileting, hygiene, etc.).
• Escort students as assigned by teacher or administrator.
• Support mobility and transport of students (bus, wheelchair, field trips).
• Monitor students to maintain a safe learning environment.
• Provide practice activities as developed by staff.
• Report concerns to the teacher and assist with resolution.
• Assist with meals and cleanup.
• Maintain records and files.
• Perform related duties as required.
