Special Education Assistant

Position Purpose

Working under the supervision of teachers, the Special Education Assistant is a vital part of the total instructional program. The services performed include instructional, clerical, supervisory, and behavior‑management duties. The overall role is to provide support services to the classroom teacher, implementing programming as directed by classroom teachers, administrators, or the Case Conference Committee. The assistant is expected to follow the Bylaws and Policies of Special Education, their assigned school, and the school corporation.

Essential Job Functions
  • Develop positive respectful relationships with students and staff.
  • Work in a positive, effective manner in the inclusion environment with students and staff.
  • Be punctual with all assignments, professional in manner and speech, and notify co‑workers and building administration prior to necessary absences.
  • Effectively collaborate and share information with the teacher of record.
  • Effectively answer questions and assist students with organizational skills, staying on task, and reviewing/re‑teaching skills.
  • Assist classroom teachers with daily duties.
  • Facilitate small group instruction.
  • Complete clerical duties as assigned by the teacher.
  • Supervise student behavior and activities.
  • Lift and move students.
  • Assist with other duties as assigned.
Equipment

Use standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copier and fax machines, calculator, and telephone.

Travel Requirements

Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

Pay Rate

$15.75 per hour.

Work Schedule

The position’s hours will be scheduled between 6.5 and 7.5 and will be finalized at the time of hire, depending on student needs. 182 days per year.
